Undoubtedly the best day of the trip so far, not that there’s been much competition. My time was split between the Oberstdorf and Füssen branches, which are less than 40 minutes apart by road.
The first couple of hours were spent between Altstädten and Fischen, on the Oberstdorf line, in brilliantly clear light with the mountains clearly visible for the first time since I got here. 2143.21 was still working the ALEX trains and 218.476, also seen a couple of days ago, was on IC2084.
Midday and the early afternoon saw a change of location to Weizen-Hopferau on the Füssen branch where freshly repainted 218.469 was working Augsburg locals and the clouds were playing “Stuff the photter” with an alarming degree of success. 218.457/460/485 were on the München REs.Things improved a little in the early afternoon with a couple of trains photographed in good light.
Back on the Oberstdorf branch, the clouds had thickened up and the light seemed to have gone for good by 16:30. I almost gave up for the day but then a great blue hole opened up over Altstäden. Two more shots were taken in good light before the clouds finally won the battle, another pic of 2143.21, probably my best so far, and a shot of 218.456 on IC/RE2013. That made four properly lit shots this afternoon, more than on every other afternoon of the trip so far put together.
Time to celebrate with a steak and a few beers methinks!
