A glorious start to the day with superb clear light and not a cloud in the sky. My first location was a spot near Ranna, north of Neuhaus on the Nürnberg - Hof/Cheb line (thanks for the tip Brian) where four westbound freights passed in just under four hours. Then it was up to Engelmannsreuth, further up the same line. Within an hour there had been a freight in each direction.

Then everything changed. A huge raft of cloud raced in from the south-west, killing the light everywhere very quickly. The freight also stopped flowing. I hung around until 17:00 but there were no more freights and no sign of the cloud clearing. Just when I decided to call it a day, the cloud melted away as quickly as it had arrived, tempting me to stay another two hours in the hope that something would turn up. Inevitably nothing did.

Looking at what should have run and what actually did run, I reckon that the two freights seen at Engelmannsreuth were the two scheduled to run during the afternoon, both running very early. Such is life in the world of freight photography. The bonus was that all the trains ran while it was sunny.
