There was a chance of sun for the first couple of hours but nothing came of it. I spent most of the morning at a location east of Etzelwang that I’d previously spotted from the train. Walking to the position from the road it dawned on me that it was a spot I’d used in 1985 but the good part of it had become very overgrown in the intervening 27 years, leaving only a short, and not very good, section clear.

The freight I was expecting didn’t show but three that I wasn’t expecting did, including a fairly anonymous orange MAK G1206 on a train of swap bodies. It did have a UIC number on the fuel tank but the only bit that registered was 511 (some detective work required). A few days ago a local gricer had mentioned trains being diverted away from Pegnitztal today and running via Weiden and Neukirchen but there was nothing on Max’s Moleworks list to indicate any changes, so I’d dismissed it. However, it might only have been freights that were diverted, which would, at least explain the two Ludmillas on westbounds. The car train seen was not the regular lunchtime working conveying Peugeots and Citroens from Kolin, this one was all VWs.

By 11:00 it had started to rain, as forecast, so I set off westwards to my base for the last few days of the trip, Walluf, on the outskirts of Wiesbaden. The Penzion I had booked was called the Lok Inn but it didn’t occur to me that it might have a railway connection until I tapped the address into the satnav. It was the Bahnhofstraße bit that gave the game away. Turns out it’s not just in Bahnhofstraße, it is the Bahnhof, Niederwalluf Bahnhof on the Rechte Rheinstrecke to be precise, converted into very comfortable accomodation. I can see the trains from my window but the platform canopy makes it all but impossible to see the numbers. That’s probably a good thing as it will force me to go out, at least when it stops raining.
