Sun 17 Jan 2010

Sunday looked like a quiet day on the main system so I headed for the Bernina and spent the day around Ospizio Bernina. The weather wasn’t perfect but it took a lot longer for the cloud to arrive than on my previous visit. There were a few surprises including a special from St. Moritz to Alp Grüm and back with old railcars 30 and 34, two coaches and an open coach full of snowmen, complete with red hats and scarves. New unit 3502 was also out on trains 1636, 1629 and 1656 and motor coach 52, now in Bernina 100 livery, like 619, was on trains 1640 and 1633.

I rode back from Alp Grüm on unit 3502 and found it less than impressive in some respects, particularly the ride, which was much more lively than it should have been. I actually found it impossible to write anything while the unit was on the move due to the hunting and swaying. There were also small but irritating issues such as a lack of coat hooks, even in first class, and table surfaces starting to peel away after a couple of days in public service.

Elsewhere on the main system, 603 was working Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains and 606 was on Bergün – Preda shuttles.

Other rumours picked up were that the new units weren't being delivered as quickly as the RhB would like and they need a lot of things tweaking before they're right.
