Britain was still in the grip of it’s biggest freeze up for almost 30 years when I left for Switzerland, where the wintry weather would have been regarded as unremarkable. Despite leaving home early, I didn’t have too much time to spare at Heathrow. Three of the four trains I could have caught to Reading were cancelled but the fourth one ran. Fortunately the Railair buses were operating normally. It even looked like BA might get the flight away on time for a while. We were certainly ready to push back at the appointed hour but there was a queue of aircraft waiting to get to the runway and the delay cost about 40 minutes.

I’d hoped to get EC101 at 17:12 from Zürich, giving me enough time to buy my BüGA* at Chur and still get the 18:58 up to Filisur. Despite getting through the airport quickly and catching a train into Zürich straight away, it was 17:15 before I got to HB and the Chur train had gone. There was a relief IC at 17:33 though, four minutes ahead of the regular train and that gave me just enough time to buy the ticket and get to the RhB train as the guard was ready to give the right-away. The process of issuing the BüGA was impressive as the system had stored my details from October and there was no need to re-enter everything. Also impressive was the way the Swiss put on extra trains when it snows while the British cancel them.

As usual, I stayed at the Hotel Grischuna, right at the end of platform 1 at Filisur station and an excellent base for a trip to the RhB.

* BüGA = (Grau)Bündner General Abonnement and is a pass giving unlimited travel on trains and most buses within the Graubünden canton. The monthly version costs CHF190 in second class and CHF270 in first class.

Sat 09 Jan 2010

Ge6/6ii 705 was booked to work the Glacier Express from Chur to Disentis and back The forecast for Ilanz was reasonable so that’s where I headed. By the time I got to Valendas-Sagogn, it was clear that the forecast was way too optimistic so I baled out and returned to Chur where 632 was backing down onto the Glacier stock and 705 was stabled. I continued in a clockwise direction via Landquart, Klosters, Sagliains, Pontresina, Filisur and Davos to Davos Laret and then returned to Filisur. At no point was the sun out. Locomotive highlights were 702 on the 07:58 Chur – St. Moritz, 706 on Bernina Express 955, 604, 606 and 608 on the Engadin push-pulls, 705 (sounds familiar) on the 11:58 Chur – St. Moritz (seen at Samedan), 602, 609 on the Bergün – Preda Schlittelzüge and 605 and 610 on the Klosters – Davos Sportzüge.

A good day for the golden oldies, if not for the sun. In total, 9 of the 10 Ge4/4i and 6 of the 7 Ge6/6ii were out - remarkable for a weekend. There were lots of extra trains to Arosa for some reason, including one that was double headed by 601 and 607. The rest were Ge4/4ii, probably explaining the number of older engines elsewhere.

Sun 10 Jan 2010

No Ge6/6ii were expected to be out but 607 was booked to work the Glacier Express from Chur to Disentis and back. Again, the best chance for the sun appeared to be the Ilanz area and this time there was actually some blue sky. Unfortunately the sun never managed to break through the cloud hanging over the mountains. This time the expected loco did produce but it wasn’t worth photographing in the gloom. Time for another ride around, this time via Reichenau-Tamins, Samedan, Pontresina, Sagliains, Klosters and Davos to Filisur. After climbing through the gloom to Preda, it was galling to encounter clear blue skies in the Engadin, too late to actually get out and take some photos. Locomotive highlights were 607 on Glacier 903 at Ilanz, 602, 609 on the Bergün – Preda Schlittelzüge, 604, 606 and 608 on the Engadin push-pulls and 605 and 610 on the Klosters – Davos Sportzüge.

Quite a contrast to Saturday with none of the Ge6/6ii rostered to turn a wheel all day. However every single Ge4/4i was out on passenger work!

  • 601 1327 & 1360 Landquart - St.Moritz & vv duty 202 vice Ge6/6ii
  • 602 829, Bergun - Preda shuttles, 858 duty 65

  • 610 Klosters - Davos shuttles duty 50
The other Ge6/6ii duty, 206 on the Chur - St.Moritz route, was worked by 652.

New unit 3502 was on test between Samedan and Poschiavo again on unadvertised extras that were available to travel on, not that I expect many group members to be interested.

Mon 11 Jan 2010

This time the forecast was for 50-80% sun in the Oberengadin and over the Bernina. It was gloriously sunny at Celerina to start with and I got my first good shots of the trip, however, the sky clouded over unexpectedly just before 11:00. There was still some blue in the south so I headed up the Bernina in an unsuccessful search for good light, before returning to Pontresina and then Filisur. Locomotive highlights were 607 waiting to leave Samedan with the stock for the Bergün – Preda Schlittelzüge, 606 on S-chanf – St. Moritz locals, 609 on RE1125, 604 on Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp workings, 705 on freight 5140 at Samedan and 802 with rotary snowplough at Alp Grüm.

Tue 12 Jan 2010

Another good forecast for the Oberengadin and over the Bernina but there was a lot of cloud around Samedan. The Bernina was completely clear, so it was off to Ospizio Bernina where I made my way with some difficulty up over snow of uncertain depth to the main road. With brilliant sunshine and deep snow everywhere, the views were stunning. After a couple of trains, some low cloud came scudding across the surface of the lake and then rapidly built up obscuring everything within the space of around 10 minutes. I walked down the road towards Bernina Lagalb in the hope that it might still be clear further north. It wasn’t, so I returned to Pontresina by bus from Lagalb. There was still some light at first but it soon went there and everywhere else in the Oberengadin. Time to give up and return to Filisur for an early bath. Locomotive highlights were 603 waiting to leave Samedan with the stock for the Bergün – Preda Schlittelzüge, 606 on Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp workings, 802 working up to Ospizio Bernina with a rotary snowplough (minutes after the light failed unfortunately) and 707 on freight 5135.

Wed 13 Jan 2010

The forecast was for heavy cloud and snow all day but, for once, it was actually a bit better in reality. There was some clearish sky to the north so that’s where I headed, spending most of the morning near Klosters Dorf and getting one shot in half sun before the light caved in completely. Next stop was Chur for a quick look at the street running on the Arosa line and then it was time to give up and go back to Filisur. Locomotive highlights were 605 and 610 on the Klosters Dorf – Davos Platz Sportzüge, 606 on freight 5232 at Untervaz-Trimmis, 701 on freight 5140 at Chur and 608 on freight 5152 at Surava. The low point was realizing the sun might be out for RE1229 at Klosters and then seeing the hideous 611 coming up the hill.

641, 648, 642, 650, 647 on Chur - St. Mo passenger duties 101 - 105 respectively
652 covered Ge4/4ii turn 303 on Chur - St. Mo passengers so it was solid Werbeloks over the Albula.

Landquart - Davos - Filisur turns were a bit of a mess as one set had no driving trailer. This set laid over at Davos for an hour and then returned to Landquart. The set that should have returned to Landquart then did a second trip to Filisur and back. Locos were as previously indicated (617, 630, 644, 649 and 651). 649 was on the set without a driving trailer and hauled in both directions.

643, 645 and 646 were on the Vereina tunnel car shuttles.

622, 611, 613, 633, 621, 612, 628, 615, 616, 627, 620, 631, 632, 614 on duties 301 - 314 respectively, mainly Disentis - Scuol-Tarasp passengers. Duties 303, 306 and 314 had no work.

626, 625, 629, 623 on Arosa duties 61 - 64 respectively. Duty 64 was the only push-pull set, the rest were hauled in both directions.

618, 624 on Pontresina - Scuol-Tarasp duties 31 - 32 respectively.

New unit 3502 continued to work freights 5922, 5929, 5336, 5151 vice Ge6/6ii duty 203. 3501 had an outing from Samedan to Alp Grüm and back.

619 remained under repair.

Thu 14 Jan 2010

The forecast for the Oberengadin was good again and with two of the three Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp turns booked for Ge4/4i haulage, it seemed a good place to go. Unfortunately there was a lot of unforecast cloud around from the start. There were some breaks but they tended to grow whenever I considered going somewhere else then filled in when there was a train around. Despite the cloud, I did manage four shots in sun including my only afternoon shot of the trip so far, at 12:03. The rest of the afternoon was as hopeless as always and I returned to Filisur early yet again. Locomotive highlights were 603 and 604 on the Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains, 609 leaving Samedan to work the Bergün – Preda shuttles, 707 working freights 5115 and 5140 and 601 shunting at Samedan after working RE1125.

Ge4/4i

  • 601 duty 402 train 1125 from Samedan to St. Mo & freight 5152

  • 610 duty 49 Klosters - Davos shuttles
The Ilanz/Jenaz freight duty was covered by 613, while 652 covered the Ge4/4ii turn on the Albula again.

Ge6/6ii

  • 702 duty 206
  • 703 repairs Landquart then a test run to Klosters and back
  • 704 duty 205
  • 705 duty 204
  • 706 duty 203
  • 707 duty 201
... and finally mention that 242 took a rotary plough from Landquart to Pontresina during the afternoon and did some ploughing in the Oberengadin overnight. 802 was also out on the Bernina with a rotary plough.

Fri 15 Jan 2010

After six days, the weather finally cleared up and the sun stayed out all day. Once again, my destination was the Oberengadin, specifically the area between La Punt-Chaumes-ch and Cinuos-chel-Brail on the Scuol-Tarasp line east of Bever. 603 and 604 were out again on the Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains with 624 on the third turn and 618 covering the short workings to S-chanf. All in all, a rewarding day with some particularly attractive locations found between Madulain and S-chanf. Elsewhere, 606 was on the Bergün – Preda shuttles, 702 worked freight 5115 in the morning and 705 and 704 were at Samedan in the evening, waiting to work freights 5164 and 5966 respectively.

During the evening, 619 worked through Filisur on train 1169, en-route to St. Moritz for an event to celebrate 100 years of the Bernina. As would have been expected, the loco had been repainted in a special livery, predominantly dark blue with a bold "Bernina 100" and a representation of a train on the spiral viaduct at Brusio.

Ge4/4i

  • 602 on duty 65 train 1250.
  • 610 & 605 on duties 49 & 50 Klosters - Davos shuttles.

  • 604 & 603 on duties 31 & 32 Pontresina - Scuol-Tarasp.
  • 609 on duty 402 train 1125 from Samedan to St. Mo & freight 5152

Ge6/6ii

  • 702, 703, 701, 706, 705, 704 on duties 201-206. 707 spare.

The Rest
The Ilanz/Jenaz freight duty was covered by 613 again, while 652 covered the Ge4/4ii turn on the Albula yet again.

242 and rotary plough went up the hill last night, as expected, but they returned to Landquart early in the morning (shame).

Quite a few double headed Ge4/4ii...
  • 632+627 0n 1257 from Chur to LQ.
  • 632+630 on 1061 from LQ to Davos.
  • 633+620 on 1241 from LQ to Scuol.

  • 619+622 on 1252 from LQ to Chur.
  • 619+614 on 1169 from Chur to St. Mo.

Sat 16 Jan 2010

Just for a change, I headed east to Klosters to try the shot between Klosters and Klosters Dorf again. The sun was just getting onto the track as I arrived but as 605 approached with train 815, it disappeared behind a mountain, only to reappear a few minutes later once the train had gone. After that initial setback, it was full sun all the way, with classes Ge6/6ii, Ge4/4i, Ge4/4iii and Ge4/4ii all photographed in a 30 minute period (locos 704, 610, 649 and 625 on trains 1327, 8027, 1029 and 1229 respectively). Getting 610 was particularly lucky as the shuttle trains don’t run from Klosters to Klosters Dorf if there are no passengers, which is most of the time. And if a train doesn’t go down, the ECS doesn’t come back.

Next stop was Bergün for a couple of Schlittelzüge with 602 and 606, also in brilliant light.

The final destination was Celerina, where the light had grown very hazy. 603 was on the ECS for 856 to S-chanf and 706 was on 1145 from Chur. Crocodile 415 was also seen running light from Samedan to St. Moritz in conjunction with the Bernina celebrations and steam snowplough Xrotd 9213 was seen heading for St. Moritz on the line from Pontresina.

I didn't go to St. Moritz where the new "Bernina 100" livery on 619 was officially unveiled and there was a snowplough demonstration with 9213. As fancy liveries go, 619's definitely one of the better ones.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, new unit 3502 was working trains 1622, 1613, 1644, 1637, 4668, 1668, 1661 and 4661 on the Bernina - the first time on scheduled services?

Ge4/4i

  • 602 on duty 65 covering trains 829, 858 and some Bergün - Preda shuttles in between.
  • 605 & 610 on duties 49 & 50 Klosters - Davos shuttles.
  • 606 on duty 411 Bergün - Preda shuttles.
  • 604 on duty 32 Pontresina - Scuol-Tarasp.
  • 603 on duty 33 St. Mo - S-chanf locals early and late.
  • 601, 609 spare.
  • 607, 608 repairs.

Ge6/6ii

  • 703 worked 4109,
  • 706 worked 1121/36/45/60.
  • 704 worked 1327/60.
Also
  • 702 worked 1216, 1241, 1248, 1273 on the Scuol - Disentis route.
  • 701 departed Pontresina at 19:55 to work some very late Bergün - Preda shuttles, finishing after midnight.
Only 705 and 707 weren't out.

The Rest

Several double headed Ge4/4ii...
  • 622+617 on 1061 from LQ to Davos.
  • 631+621 on 1120 from St. Mo to Chur.
  • 627+622 on 1237 from LQ to Scuol.
  • 622+627 on 1244 from Scuol to LQ.
  • 621+626 on 1437 from Chur to Arosa.
  • 626+621 on 1444 from Arosa to Chur (propelling).
  • 613+623 on 1429 from Chur to Arosa.
  • 613+629 on 1440 from Arosa to Chur.

And finally 512 worked a special from Zizers Altlöser to Klosters and back.

Sun 17 Jan 2010

Sunday looked like a quiet day on the main system so I headed for the Bernina and spent the day around Ospizio Bernina. The weather wasn’t perfect but it took a lot longer for the cloud to arrive than on my previous visit. There were a few surprises including a special from St. Moritz to Alp Grüm and back with old railcars 30 and 34, two coaches and an open coach full of snowmen, complete with red hats and scarves. New unit 3502 was also out on trains 1636, 1629 and 1656 and motor coach 52, now in Bernina 100 livery, like 619, was on trains 1640 and 1633.

I rode back from Alp Grüm on unit 3502 and found it less than impressive in some respects, particularly the ride, which was much more lively than it should have been. I actually found it impossible to write anything while the unit was on the move due to the hunting and swaying. There were also small but irritating issues such as a lack of coat hooks, even in first class, and table surfaces starting to peel away after a couple of days in public service.

Elsewhere on the main system, 603 was working Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains and 606 was on Bergün – Preda shuttles.

Ge4/4i

  • 602 on duty 65 covering trains 829, 858 and some Bergün - Preda shuttles in between.
  • 610 & 605 on duties 49 & 50 Klosters - Davos shuttles.
  • 606 on duty 411 Bergün - Preda shuttles.
  • 603 on duty 34 Pontresina - Scuol-Tarasp.
  • 604 on duty 33 St. Mo - S-chanf locals early and late.
  • 601, 609 spare.
  • 607, 608 repairs.

Ge6/6ii

  • 705 on duty 202 trains 1327, 1360.
  • 702 on Glaciers 903, 910 between Chur and Disentis.
No Ge6/6ii on 1121/36/45/60 - covered by 642.

The Rest

Several double headed Ge4/4ii...
  • 614+625 on 1245 from LQ to Scuol
  • 625+614 on 1252 from Scuol to LQ
  • 611+619 on 1116 from St. Mo to Chur
  • 619+627 on 1269 from Chur to LQ
  • 613+633 on 1429 from Chur to Arosa

  • 623+631 on 1440 from Arosa to Chur
  • 626+613 on 1444 from Arosa to Chur (propelling)
Other rumours picked up were that the new units weren't being delivered as quickly as the RhB would like and they need a lot of things tweaking before they're right.

Mon 18 Jan 2010

Another quiet day on the main system and another trip to the Bernina, this time heading further south to the area around Privilasco on the climb from Poschiavo to Alp Grüm. This time the weather remained sunny all day and Privilasco, deep in the valley, kept the light for much longer than I’d imagined. Care had to be taken to avoid wasting prime shots on either the Bernina 100 liveried motor coach or the new unit but it was a good day overall with a high proportion of class ABe4/4ii power cars about, both working singly and in pairs. The most memorable part of the day was the climb from Bernina Lagalb to Ospizio Bernina and on along the shore of Lago Bianco towards Alp Grüm. Motor coaches 48 and 43 were propelling a snowplough and kicked up enormous plumes of snow, like waves crashing over the bow of a ship in rough seas. Of course it was impossible to photograph without getting a camera and a face full of snow but it was marvellous to watch.

802 was passed at Ospizio Bernina on the way out with a rotary snowplough. On the main system 601 was working the Bergün – Preda Schlittelzüge and 603 and 604 were out on the Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains. With 3502 now appearing to work regularly on the Bernina (on the same trains as on Sunday), it was a great relief to see 5151 had reverted to Ge6/6ii haulage.

Tue 19 Jan 2010

The Ge4/4i turns on the Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains were once again in alignment with best times for the photos I wanted to get, so the day was spent in the Engadin, starting at S-chanf and working up to Madulain before taking a train up to Pontresina for most of the afternoon and finishing high on the hillside overlooking Celerina. My first shot was planned for the bridge west of S-chanf but it was still in shadow until around 15 minutes before the train was due. As the sun got onto the track I breathed a huge sigh of relief and then looked up to see that the only cloud in the sky had formed close to the sun. Sure enough it drifted across at just the wrong moment and scuppered the shot. Definitely one to go back to. The rest of the day went remarkably smoothly with every other shot in full sun right up to the end of the day. The only disappointment was getting white COOP liveried 641 on the 15:02 off St. Moritz, not the best engine to photograph at any time, let alone for a distant shot in snow.

Locomotive highlights were 609 on the Bergün – Preda shuttles, 604 and 606 on the Pontresina – Scuol-Tarasp trains and 601 stabled at Samedan after working RE1125 to St. Moritz.

Wed 20 Jan 2010

My last day on the RhB, for this week at least. All trip I’d been contemplating a trip to Davos to get the morning shots at Wolfgang and then look at some positions between Platz and Frauenkirch. Any day the weather looked likely to be good, the combination of engines wasn’t, with the prime trains scheduled to be hauled by 644, 649 or both. I’d decided to go on the last day anyway as it was a good way of getting to Landquart for my train back to Zürich and I could leave my luggage at Davos Platz while I went out photographing. It got even better when they swapped 644 and 648 over, the first change of duties for Ge4/4iii since I arrived. The prime trains were hauled by 648 and 651, my two favourites, and there was the added bonus of getting 605 and 608 on the Sportzüge as well. A pretty good end to the trip.

The journey back to Zürich was on an ICN unit on train ICN508, the first time I’d been on one apart from the odd trip from Zürich HB to Flughafen or v.v. It was interesting to compare the smooth tilting, comfort and ambiance of the ICN with the awful Czech Pendolinos with their claustrophobic high backed seats and jerky tilting. From HB to Flughafen I caught a Konstanz bound IR, propelled by a 460.

There were forecasts of heavy snow in south-eastern England and I half expected my flight to Heathrow to be delayed. In the event, it left on time and even arrived a few minutes early, although the time gained was lost again when we parked at a remote stand and had to be bussed to the terminal.

On the Bernina, 801 was out on passenger trains, working trains 4624, 1624, 1617 and 1652, along with an ABe4/4ii. 802 worked 4657 in the evening, along with motor coach 48.

Mon 25 Jan 2010

After four days back in Blighty it was time to return to Graubünden for the second part of this winter’s Rhätischebahn extravaganza. This time I flew with Swiss as strike action seemed a real possibility on BA. Getting up and travelling to Heathrow in time for an 06:00 departure was a bit of a bind but the actual journey was really smooth and hassle free. It’s amazing how well things work when there are very few passengers around. We pushed back a few minutes early and landed a whole 20 minutes before the booked arrival time. Everything went smoothly at Zürich as well and 30 minutes after landing I was on an S-bahn train heading for Zürich HB (450059 on train 18231), a good connection into IR1765 to Chur with 11136 on the front.

After four days in dreary grey Britain, it was good to get back to Switzerland where, predictably, the weather was dreary and grey. I was in Chur well before 11:00 and checked into the Hotel Post in the city centre. There was then the small matter of where to go for the rest of the day. Some blue sky had been seen around Landquart earlier, so I headed in that direction on RE3826 headed by 11157. No chance of the sun there, so RE1237 with 621 took me on to Klosters Dorf where there was a little weak sun. On towards Davos behind 605 on 827, passing 606 on 826 at Cavadürli. The light wasn't much better at Wolfgang either.

By now I'd given up trying to think of other places I might get to in time for the light and decided to go for a trundle over to Filisur, up to Samedan, down the Engadin and back to Chur via the Vereina Tunnel. The first part of the journey was behind 617 on 1829. The plan had changed before we got to Filisur. Wiesen viaduct was in sun, so I baled out there to get 617 returning to Davos with 1832, followed by 630 out and back with 1833 and 1836 an hour later. Fortunately the sun then started to go behind the hills so I didn't have to agonise over whether to photograph the next train (1837) with 649. Instead I travelled on it to Filisur and swapped to equally unphotogenic 644 on RE1152 back to Chur.

Being a Monday, there were a couple of extra Ge4/4i workings around Chur; 602 worked 1250 to Ilanz as usual and was all set for the first of two trips to Arosa with 1469 when I saw it in the evening.

All the expected freights ran with 707 on 5336 (11:23 Zernez - Landquart) and 5151 (14:10 Landquart - Pontresina), 705 on 5155 (15:41 Landquart - Pontresina) and 610 on 5257.

Tue 26 Jan 2010

The forecast was for cloud to spread in from the north to cover the whole area by mid-afternoon. I went south on the 07:20 Chur - Scuol-Tarasp train with 619 in the hope of getting some sun somewhere. There were plenty of options if there was any good light, Saas, Klosters, Ardez, S-chanf, Bever, Celerina or even the Bernina. 706 was waiting to leave Landquart with 8521, an ECS to Chur, and 605 was ready to follow us south with 811. The cloud was solid in the Prättigau but by Klosters a few chinks were visible on the southern horizon.

Emerging from the Vereina tunnel at Sagliains, the sky was largely clear with just a few bits of cloud floating around the mountaintops. 645 was seen there on a Vereina car shuttle. The other two locos, seen at Selfranga, appeared to be 643 and 646. I changed at Sagliains to train 1921, propelled by 618. 604 was passed at Susch with 1924. As we climbed up the Engadin it was starting to look pretty good and I got off at S-chanf expecting to get something in sun. Twenty minutes later, before the sun had even crept over the horizon, it was all over and the only clear sky visible was a good way to the south-west. 624 was seen on 1928 and 607 on 853. I left S-chanf on 1925, with 604, bound for Pontresina, or further south, in a desperate attempt to find the sun.

There was an opportunity to see how the Bernina Express was handled at Samedan and Pontresina. Unusually, 1925 doesn't wait at Samedan for 1125 to arrive from Chur. It waits until 1125 is drawing into the platform and just when potential connectees think that they might make it, 1925 leaves. 642 was on 1125 and 609 was waiting to take the St. Moritz coaches forward. At Pontresina motor coaches 53 and 54 arrived from St. Moritz with a second class coach and a Panoramawagen in tow. After passengers had boarded, the train pulled forward and waited. 642 arrived from Samedan a few minutes later on the same platform, uncoupled and pulled forward onto the headshunt. The motor coaches then backed our train onto the waiting coaches, coupled up and we were away. 642 didn't wait long and was heading back to Samedan light engine before we left.

As we climbed the Bernina it became clear that the blue sky was heading south faster than we were, so I baled out at Alp Grüm and returned on the next train, 1644 with 46. By Ospizio Bernina the line was actually in the clouds and by Pontresina it was snowing. New unit 3502 was out but working a slightly different diagram to the previous week, including trains 1640 and 1633.

After a short break for lunch, I headed back north, firstly on 1948 to Samedan and then to Chur on RE1148 with 644. 603 was at Bergün waiting to leave for Preda on 871, 609 was overtaken at Thusis on 5152 and 702 was at Bonaduz on 5151.

Later in the evening 707 passed Chur with 5264.

Wed 27 Jan 2010

According to the forecast this was going to be the sunniest day of the trip or possibly the snowiest of the trip if you believed CNN. I chose not to and set off to get some pictures.

As usual, the day started with a trip on the 07:20 from Chur, train 1221 with 628 on the front. 703 was at Landquart on ECS 8521 and 606 was waiting to follow us up the hill with 811. I got off at Klosters and walked to the first location, halfway to Klosters Dorf, to try the shot of 815 that had eluded me a week or so earlier when the sun dived behind a mountain at the critical moment. This time there was some thin cloud that took the edge off the light at times, particularly when there was a Ge4/4i around. As far as locos went, it was pretty good with 648 on 1025, 619 on 1225, 605 on 815, 606 on 8027 and 651 on 1029.

By 10:20 the light was getting a bit head on and a change of location was called for. I just missed getting to Klosters Dorf in time to catch train 1228 to Saas but there was a bus 10 minutes later that got me there in plenty of time for the next batch of trains. The next two hours were a bit cloudy and I was deprived of shots of 649 on 1033 and 611 on 1237 (oh dear, what a shame). After that the light improved for most of the afternoon and 630, 633, 648, 631 and 701 obliged on uphill trains 1041, 1241, 1045, 1245 and 5047 respectively. The light didn't last long enough to complete the set by getting 651 going up the hill on 1049 but it had gone down earlier without the usual extra coaches on the back, making a going away shot possible for a change.

After a pleasant walk down the hill to Küblis, 633 took me back to Chur on train 1248. Not a perfect day by any means but compared to most days this month, not bad at all.

Thu 28 Jan 2010

Another day when my destination was determined almost entirely by the weather. The forecast was for a band of snow across Switzerland, from east to west, with southern parts, including the Engadin and Bernina, remaining largely clear. It was already snowing heavily in Chur before dawn and it was more in hope than expectation that I set off to try and find some light, somewhere, anywhere.

As usual the day started with a ride on Disentis - Scuol-Tarasp train 1221, hauled by 613. At Landquart, 605 and 606 were ready for another day on the Klosters - Davos shuttles and an unidentified Ge6/6ii was waiting on ECS 8521.

It was World Economic Forum week at Davos and a group of city gents were waiting on the platform under the indicator that read "07:47 RE Davos". A few yards down the platform sat 617 on the 07:47 RE to Davos. Until 07:47 precisely, when it left for Davos, leaving the world's finest brains still standing on the platform looking confused. If these people can't successfully master catching a train on the world's most passenger friendly railway, what chance do they have of solving the problems of a whole planet?

It continued snowing heavily all the way up the Prättigau to Klosters, where 3501 was seen heading for Landquart empty stock. On the other side of the Vereina tunnel the weather was better. It was still terminally dull but only snowing moderately. I changed trains at Sagliains onto 1921, propelled by 607. 604 was the other Ge4/4i working in the Engadin and was crossed at Zuoz on train 1928. 703 was waiting at Pontresina with freight 5140. There was also an improvement in the weather - it had stopped snowing and there was a definite hint of brightness where the sun should be. I almost had to stop myself yelling out "Onward, to the Bernina, it's our only chance!".

Motor coaches 53 and 54, working train 1621, clawed their way up out of the gloom into clear, bright sunshine above Bernina Lagalb. With a strong wind whipping clouds of snow across the frozen surface of Lago Bianco and our motor coaches crashing through drifts, sending plumes of snow flying in all directions, the run over the top was, once again, a fantastic experience. Things were a little calmer on the south side of the pass when I got off at Cavaglia.

The three hours I spent at Cavaglia were rewarding but difficult. I lost count of the number of times that I fell over in the deep snow and the biting northerly wind made standing outside really uncomfortable. Full marks to RhB for keeping heated waiting rooms, even at remote stations like Cavaglia. Apart from one train that got zapped by a cloud, everything passed in good light. There was plenty of variety as well with motor coaches of both types, singly and in pairs, and new unit 3502. One train was even propelling a snowplough. Preserved motor coaches 30 and 34 went through on a southbound special and departmental motor coach 9922 was also seen heading south with something numbered 9916 in tow.

I returned north on train 1656 with motor coaches 45 and 44, changing to train 1956 with 607 at Pontresina and to train 1156 with 652 at Samedan. 702 was seen at Samedan on freight 5164. 609 was on the Bergün - Preda shuttles. 706 was looped at Alvaneu with freight 5151 and 703 waited at Thusis with 5155. It was still snowing when I got back to Chur.

Fri 29 Jan 2010

Not much hope for sun anywhere today but, as usual, the best chance appeared to be further south. As always, I took train 1221 at 07:20 from Chur, with 614 in charge today. 605 and 606 were at Landquart as usual, waiting to work the Klosters - Davos shuttles. Unusually, 620 was on ECS 8521 instead of the expected Ge6/6ii. For the second day running there was a new unit waiting at Klosters but this time it was 3502, apparently heading towards Landquart as empty stock.

Although the cloud was thinning by Klosters, it was still overcast. The weather looked much better on the other side of the Vereina Tunnel, with a mixture of very thin high cloud and small patches of blue sky. I changed to 1921, propelled by 604, at Sagliains and travelled up the Engadin to S-chanf. 607 was crossed at Susch on 1924 and 701 was crossed at Zernez on either a late running 5922 or an early 5336 (they’re both part of the same turn anyway).

For the fourth time this month, I walked out to the bridge west of S-chanf in the hope of getting a Ge4/4i in good light. As train time approached a large dark cloud edged towards the sun. Just when it looked like the cloud would win again, 604 rolled into view and passed in good, although not perfect light - probably as good as I'll get though.

The next pic was planned for Madulain but, less than half an hour later, the plan had changed. The sky had completely clouded over apart from a rapidly diminishing blue patch around Samedan. Instead of photting 607 on train 1932, I travelled on it to Sagliains and changed onto RE1236 with 619 on the front. Crocodile 415 was crossed at Cinuos-chel-Brail, heading west with a single, empty flat wagon.

On the other side of the Vereina Tunnel the weather was marginally better, but only marginally. 606 was stabled at Klosters, in between Davos shuttles. Train 1237 to Scuol-Tarasp was crossed at Klosters Dorf, double headed by 631 and 615. I got off at Saas in the hope that the light would improve but the best I got was very weak sun. In addition to the booked trains, 632 took a three-coach special down the hill, following RE1040. This was was almost certainly something to do with the World Economic Forum as it had its own military helicopter escort - first time I've ever seen that!

After a couple of hours, it was obvious that the light wasn't going to get any better, so it was back to the station for train 1244 back to Chur, eleven coaches and a van, double headed as far as Landquart by 615 and 631. The van came off there and so did 615. 703 was crossed at Küblis on 5047. 601 and 707 were at Landquart, presumably after working 5042 and waiting to work 5155 respectively. 610 was at Chur having just arrived from Disentis on Glacier 910.

615 started on duty 305, then 615 and 631 double headed 1237 (presumably from Landquart) and 1244. At Landquart 615 was removed from 1244 and 631 continued.

§ A bit of inspired guesswork here.

ø May have only done 8521, not the whole turn.

Sat 30 Jan 2010

My last day on the RhB started in the same way as all the others, with a journey southwards on train 1221 in search of the sun. Not that there was a lot of hope according to the forecast. Today's motive power on 1221 was 616. At Landquart 606 and 707 were on the stock for trains 815 and 1327 respectively and 605 was in the platform with 811. Further up the valley, 702 was crossed at Klosters Dorf on 1220, a very pleasant surprise. I changed to train 1921, propelled by 618, at Sagliains. Heavy overcast and snow in the Prättigau had given way to just overcast in the Engadin. There were some holes in the cloud, where a weak, hazy sun shone through, but nothing that made me want to get out and take pictures.

By now plan B was in operation and that meant continuing to Pontresina. 604 was crossed at Susch on 1924 and 607 was waiting at Bever with 8850, the ECS to S-chanf. At Samedan, 609 was ready to go with 1332, a Saturdays only train to Landquart that started running today, and 601 was on the stock of 1336, ready to follow an hour later. I'd hoped to photograph these trains somewhere in the Engadin but, as they were only two coaches long, they wouldn't have made particularly good photos anyway. 706 arrived at Samedan with 1121 while we were waiting. This train is booked for a Ge6/6ii at the weekend.

I returned immediately from Pontresina to Samedan with 618 on train 1932, then changed to train 1132 to Chur with 652 on the front. 621 was crossed at Bergün with Bernina Express 955, which runs as a separate train at weekends, and 603 was waiting to follow it up the hill with Schlittelzug 855. The second Schlittelzug, which only runs at weekends, was crossed at Alvaneu, on its way up from Chur, with 602.

After arrival at Chur I had the best part of an hour to photograph 626 departing through the streets with 1437 to Arosa and collect my bag from left luggage. Then it was off home via the scenic route. Train 1232 with 614 took me to Disentis, crossing the 9th Ge4/4i of the day, 610, on Glacier 900 at Tavanasa. This is another train that just started running today.

From Disentis, I continued westwards on MGB train 859 with 106 on the front. From Mompe-Tujetsch to Nätschen was new track for me and a few potential photo positions were noted, particularly around Sedrun and on the descent from Oberalppass to Andermatt. Another change at Andermatt and I was heading down to Göschenen on train 2658 with motor baggage van 53. No photspots on this section, it's just one long, steeply inclined avalanche shelter.

At Göschenen SBB took over, in the form of 460057 on IR2286 to Zürich HB. There was a fair bit of freight on the Gotthard but most of it seemed to be hauled by DB 185s rather than the expected SBB Re10/10s. Things must have changed in the ten years or so since my last visit. At Arth-Goldau we crossed what I can only decribe as a spotty SOB Re4/4iv on a Voralpen Express working. Nothing else of significance was seen on the way into Zürich HB, from where 460109 propelled me to Zürich Flughafen on IR2362.

The flight home was delayed around 30 minutes but otherwise uneventful.
