The first day of the trip started with a long drive from home to the Mosel Valley via the Channel Tunnel, Lille and Luxembourg. This is usually a real slog but was relatively easy on this occasion due to the lack of traffic on a Sunday morning. Apart from Eurotunnel 9827 at the rear of the tunnel shuttle, nothing of railway interest was seen on the journey to Bullay.
The Mosel was relatively busy for a Sunday with three freights and a passenger special seen in addition to the usual passengers. The special went north past Bullay at 13:40, just after I'd arrived, hauled by an ex-ÖBB class 1042 electric in "Lok Magazin" livery, believed to be Centralbahn's 1042.520. The three freights were all hauled by class 185s, one DB, one CFL Cargo without branding but identifiable from its UIC code, and a very smart Dispolok in black with CFL Cargo logos.
Two of the three RE trains seen were worked by 143s on double-deck push-pull sets. The third was the through Kaiserslautern to Koblenz train that was a class 425 EMU last time I was here and still is. All the RBs seen were shiny plastic class 442 or 443 EMUS, a definite turn for the worse since my last visit. The other thing that has changed significantly is the InterCity service, which has dwindled to two northbound trains in the morning and two southbounds in the afternoon/evening, except on Sundays when one of the northbounds runs in the afternoon instead. This train and one of the southbounds were seen, both hauled by class 181 electrics, unsurprisingly.
Although it had been a beautiful, clear morning in France, the cloud had been continuous all the way from Charleroi and there wasn't any sign of it clearing in the afternoon. I had planned to wait for RE5241, booked to be worked by a CFL class 4000, but with no prospect of a good shot and having been up since 3am, I decided to call it a day after the two 181s had passed around 16:00.
