Another cloudy day with the odd brighter spell but no real sunshine. I started with a few pictures at Bacharach, where I’d stayed the night. The stopping passengers were MRB class 460 EMUs, as expected, but both Koblenz - Frankfurt REs seen were worked by top’n’tail class 143s on double-deck stock. The trains I was actually after were EC7 booked for a hired Dispolok class 182 and IC119 booked for a class 103. EC7 produced 182.070 but, no great surprise, IC119 was worked by 120.148. At least 120s are attractive locos and not particularly frequent visitors to the Rhein Valley. The other IC services seen were worked by 101s, including one northbound train that I couldn’t identify, possibly an extra to cater for passengers grounded by a one day strike of Lufthansa ground staff.
After IC119 had passed it was time to head east to Bayern and the diesel worked lines east of Nürnberg. It was almost sunny by the time I got to Hersbruck so, instead of the planned exploration, I ended up near Etzelwang, attempting to photograph class 232 hauled freights. Almost sunny was as good as it got and most of the time it was just plain dull. Three freights were seen; a westbound stone train and the two regular westbound freights from Amberg and Plzen. The biggest change was on the passenger front. On previous trips, the regional passengers had been worked by class 610 units with only the occasional class 612 appearing. This time it was the other way round with class 612s on everything apart from a single class 610 worked train. No ALEX trains of course, they were killed off by DB operated buses at the end of last year.
