After four days, summer appears to be over and cold, dull, wet weather has returned to southern Germany. The day was spent travelling around on a Baden Württemburg Ticket, looking for photspots from the comfort of a train. From Wolfegg, on the Kißlegg - Aulendorf line, I travelled to Aulendorf, down to Friedrichshafen, back up to Ulm then on to Stuttgart, down to Rottweil, across to Donaueschingen, back to Ulm and finally back to Wolfegg via Memmingen.

I was glad I took the first class for an extra €5 option as second class was wedged from Friedrichshafen to Stuttgart and even first class was close to full. In contrast, there was nobody else in first class all the way from Donaueschingen back to Ulm, one of the most scenic and least well known routes in Germany. It’s probably the thought of three hours stuck in a 611 that puts people off, which is why my whole journey was timed around catching the only loco hauled train on the line.

There weren’t many surprises along the way but a few points of note. Rottweil - Tuttlingen was closed for engineering work with buses replacing the IC passengers between Rottweil and Singen. A northbound IC was seen behind a 181 and a southbound appeared to be waiting to leave Stuttgart with a 101 and a 110 double heading. Unfortunately the quality traction was coupled inside. A more sensible arrangement appeared to be in place for regional passengers, namely the connecting Hohenzollerische Landesbahnen services to Braunlingen via Villingen and Donaueschingen were strengthened to three class 650 railcars and extended to Singen. The HzL binary driving style was interesting with nothing between flat out and braking hard experienced.

There seemed to be a lot of class 420 units (proper EMUs) around Stuttgart but most of them were stabled with class 423 units seen on the vast majority of actual trains. Nothing more modern than a 423 was seen.

In terms of finding locations it was an extremely useful day with a number of promising locations identified on the Friedrichshafen - Ulm and Ulm - Stuttgart lines and even a few on the Memmingen - Kißlegg line. The most scenic sections of the Tuttlingen - Ulm line appear almost impossible to photograph successfully with the only hauled service running at the worst possible time for the light and much of the line heavily overgrown. With grim weather forecast for the next week, it may all be academic anyway.
