Sun 12 May 2013

The last day of the trip started in the Rhein Valley at Bacharach where the usual 101 worked trains were seen in addition to the MRCE 182 on EC7 and a 120 on IC119, incidentally the same locos that had gone north the previous day in both cases. The only northbound trains recorded below are those with propelling locos. My position didn’t allow me to get a good look at locos on the front of northbound trains but there was a northbound Autozug early on with a 110/115/140 on the front and a northbound freight with a 145/152/185. I was also aware of a few freights on the opposite bank but much fewer than the previous day. After about two hours of the sun only coming out when there wasn’t a train around, I got a southbound ICE and a class 460 EMU in good light and that was it.

At lunchtime I moved over to Pünderich, south of Bullay, on the Mosel where the clouds prevented any shots from being taken in good light, despite a lot of blue sky. In almost two hours there were no loco hauled passengers apart from a northbound special hauled by a pair of Re4/4is belonging to Centralbahn. This train seems to be a regular occurance on a Sunday. A northbound freight hauled by a pair of 185s was also seen. Apart from that it was all EMUs, a 425 on RE12003 and 442s or 443s on the locals. I left just before 15:00, pursued by a heavy shower.

All that was left was a long drive through Luxembourg, across southern Belgium and northern France to Calais, a shuttle ride through the tunnel and then home.

Sat 11 May 2013

A dull, wet start in the Neckar Valley, which was a shame as there was a 181 on IC181 and 115.205 on IC284. By midday, I’d looked at all the potential photspots I could think of and there was no sign of the weather improving. I decided to head north to the Rhein Valley, where I planned to spend the night anyway. When I got to Oberwesel it was still dull and wet but within half an hour the cloud had broken and the sun shone for much of the next three hours.

Several IC workings were seen, mostly worked by 101s and all but one hauled. The only train that was propelled passed while I was sheltering from a shower and isn’t recorded below. One IC working wasn’t identified but it ran close to the time a southbound ICE was expected (the ICE wasn’t seen). There was a bit of freight on the left bank as well, not to mention the many freights that passed on the other side of the river.

Fri 10 May 2013

After a disappointing day in Switzerland, I set of for Germany and the start of the long journey home. I hadn’t got very far before the sun came out, necessitating a detour to a favourite location just south of Rottweil for a couple of phots before continuing to my stop for the night, near Sulz am Neckar.

Sun 05 May 2013

And on the ninth day there was light, lots of beautiful clear sunlight. In fact I only lost one shot due to cloud all day, miraculous by the standards of this trip. In essence the day followed a similar pattern to the previous one, starting off on the München - Lindau line in the morning, spending the middle of the day on the Ulm - Friedrichshafen line before finishing off near Lindau in the evening.

There was still plenty that went wrong on the day, such as the first two ALEX workings seemingly turning up as class 612 DMUs, confusing me enough to mean I missed the first westbound EC, or having set up for the perfect shot of a three-coach bike train on Maria Thann viaduct, having to recompose hurriedly when a four coach train appeared.

There was plenty that went right though and some bonuses as well, including a number of additional workings. The extra trains didn’t appear in the DB PDF timetables but they did show up on the InterRail iPhone app. Seeing an unexpected Friedrichshafen - Friedrichshafen via Aulendorf, Kißlegg and Lindau working, I assumed that it would be a DMU but set up for it anyway. Imagine my surprise when a 218 on a push-pull set came round the corner, on the north end of the set as well. Another followed in the opposite direction about 30 minutes later. The final working was an incredible Friedrichshafen - Aulendorf - Kißlegg - Lindau - Friedrichshafen - Aulendorf - Ulm train. All these trains had “Bodo Ringzug” on their destination indicators and were worked by Ulm 218s. Other trains seen were very much as expected.

Early on the Monday morning I set off for five days in Switzerland.
