ND5 Class Co'-Co' Diesel-Electrics

Over the years, China has imported a number of foreign diesels with mixed results. Undoubtably the most successful are the ND5 class diesel electric Co-Cos built by General Electric in Erie Pennsylvania in the mid 1980s. The first 200 were basically GE's standard 3600 HP, C36-7 model while later locos had a modified cab and lower short hood. China took over 400 ND5, many more than were bought by US railroads.

They are based at Jinan, Bengbu and Nanjing Dong depots on the main Beijing - Shanghai route. Dalian also had a large allocation for working freight north to Shenyang prior to electrification but the number is now thought to be much reduced.
