The day got off to its usual foggy start. After watching a couple of trains in the gloom at Aulendorf, there was time to check out a couple of spots between Roßberg and Bad Waldsee to see if they would be any good for the stone train. They weren’t, so it was off to Durlesbach where the fog was clearing rapidly by the time I arrived at 09:45. Ten minutes later I was in position and set up. The sun was shining from a clear blue sky. All I had to do was wait for the trains to roll by.
Wait is exactly what I did but nothing came, absolutely zilch for almost two hours. There should have been ten trains in that time but none of them showed up. Obviously something had gone seriously wrong somewhere but I know not what. I’d planned to leave at 11:30 anyway and in the circumstances that seemed a good idea.
The plan was to spend the afternoon at a spot north of Beimerstetten, just north of Ulm on the Stuttgart line. It had looked good from the train and turned out to be an excellent location. There was no shortage of trains there, with 66 movements seen in around five hours, most of which were loco worked. The problem was the light, which kept getting snuffed out by clouds whenever there was a train worth photographing. I didn’t come away empty handed but didn’t get many decent pictures for my efforts.
The variety at Beimerstetten was incredible with classes 101, 143, 146, 218 and ÖBB 1016 and 1116 on passengers, plus several ICEs and a pair of 611s. The 611s were probably a result of the disruption around Aulendorf as the trains they worked were loco and coaches yesterday. The freight side was just as interesting with a Ludmilla, a class 66 and a Voith Maxima representing dieseldom and the inevitable class 185s being joined by 151s, a 140, a 152, an HGK 145 and a CFL 4000. Definitely a location worth another visit.
