17/10/13 21:45
The weather was back to normal this morning, i.e. dull and wet, and the forecasts were pessimistic about the whole day. I took advantage of the lack of photographic light to find out more about the stone train operation at Roßberg.
The empties had passed Bad Waldsee, where I was staying, at around 07:10 each morning. At Roßberg the train was split into two sections and the loco pushed the first section, consisting of around 20 wagons, under the loader and then drew forward slowly as each wagon was loaded in turn. By 09:00 the first section had been loaded and was pulled back into the station. The loco then coupled up to the remaining 10 wagons and repeated the process with them. Loading was completed around 09:45 and the newly loaded wagons were returned to the station and coupled to the previously loaded set. After RB22837 had passed at 10:18, the stone train set off for Aulendorf, where it must have arrived at just the right time to slot in between the Ulm - Schaffhausen at 10:35 and the Ulm - Lindau at 10:55. That’s been it’s normal path whenever I’ve seen the train but it’s around an hour earlier than its official schedule.
Operations on the Ulm - Friedrichshafen line appeared to be back to normal after yesterday’s chaos. After seeing the stone train passing Durlesbach, just in case the sun had miraculously appeared, I headed west to the Gäubahn (again).
Several new locations were attempted and, remarkably, the only one that was any good produced a train in sun, with a 181 as well! I was so chuffed at getting something in the sun that I didn’t realise it was a 181 until I looked at the picture several hours later. There was another 181 and a 120 out on the ICs as well. The only other surprise was seeing a block train of sugar beet in SBB wagons heading south in the early afternoon, unfortunately behind a 185 and not something more exotic - an SBBC 421 would have been nice.
