Sat 03 Mar 2012Up at really stupid o’clock to get to Heathrow in time for the 06:00 Swiss flight to Zürich. We were away spot on time but thick fog delayed our arrival by about 15 minutes, miraculous really as I’ve been stranded for days at other airports by fog that wasn’t as bad. Full marks to Zürich, Swiss and ILS.
Runway to platform took a commendable 30 minutes but SBB disappointed by providing a class 514 EMU for the 09:32 S16 train to Zürich HB. The 10:07 additional IC to Chur was also a disappointment. Instead of the anticipated RE4/4ii, there was a very bendy long white plastic thing called 500.032. As tilting trains go it wasn’t bad, being very comfortable and incredibly smooth riding, unlike the dreadful pendolinos.
The first pleasant surprise of the trip came at Landquart where RE1028 arrived from Davos hauled by 616 double-heading 624 instead of running as a Ge4/4iii sandwich. It’s a long time since I’ve seen a passenger hauled from Davos to Landquart. At Chur I bought my Monats BüGA (Graubünden rail and bus pass) for CHF310, slightly more than last year but still miles cheaper than a Swiss Pass. The first haulage of the trip soon followed, behind Ge4/4iii 641, masquerading as a Co-op carrier bag, on RE1137 to St.Moritz. I got off at Filisur and checked into the Hotel Grischuna, conveniently located at the south end of platform 1. One other oddity seen en-route was a Thusis - Chur local formed of motor coach + trailer + motor coach + driving trailer.
The afternoon was spent at the Landwasser Viaduct overlook where the usual procession of Ge4/4iiis was seen. The Schlittelbahn from Preda to Bergün doesn’t seem to be operating and, according to a notice at Filisur Bf, neither are the Schlittelzüge. That would explain the presence of 605, stabled on a push-pull set at Chur GB, and the non-appearance of, 858, the return train to Chur, at the viaduct.

Sun 04 Mar 2012It wasn’t difficult to decide where to go today. The weather forecast was best in the north and there was a pair of Ge4/4is booked to work Glacier Expresses 903 and 910 from Chur to Disentis and back. The snow was really deep in the Rhein Gorge so any ideas of getting the Glaciers there soon faded and I settled on an old favourite, the curve between Castrisch and Ilanz.
The morning was fairly sunny, although not as clear as I would have liked, and the hourly Ge4/4ii hauled Scuol - Disentis trains kept me busy. Fortunately most of the silly liveried engines were elsewhere and only 619 in “Bernina 100” colours interrupted a solid parade of red. 610 and 603 duly appeared on Glacier 903, overkill for a six coach train but still very nice to see.
By early afternoon the cloud was building up and by the time the pair returned on Glacier 910, the light had gone. There was no point in hanging around and I returned to Filisur.

Mon 05 Mar 2012The forecast was for cloud and rain turning to snow everywhere and proved to be very accurate. Gricing activities started just after 06:00 with a few shots of Ge4/4is 603 and 610 at Filisur, on the early morning mixed from Chur to Samedan, with the sleet picked out nicely by the station lights. The rest of the day was built around being in position for the pair’s subsequent workings.
Next stop was Samedan, where the Engadin push-pull workings were in a state of disarray with nothing working its booked turns. Train 1921 from Scuol to Pontresina was 619 hauling 3 coaches instead of the booked push-pull in push mode. The Bergün - Preda Schlittelzüge weren’t running and the allocated loco and push-pull set had been put into service on the shuttles from S’chanf to St.Moritz and Celerina. 603 and 610 duly worked RE1125 from Samedan to St.Moritz, passing me in blizzard conditions near Celerina.
The weather had clearly set in for the day so I decided to go somewhere that wouldn’t work on a sunny day, Preda. Here at least there were notices saying why the Schlittelbahn was closed - Lawinengefahr (risk of avalanches). A three hour session produced four freights, three hauled by Ge6/6ii and the fourth by 603 and 610, in addition to the hourly passengers in each direction. There were no pesky sledgers to get in the pics and no pesky avalanches either.
Then it was back to Filisur as the snow had stopped and the weather wasn’t really bad enough for interesting photography.

Tue 06 Mar 2012The usual three Ge4/4is were out again today, 610 and 603 on the Glaciers between Chur and Disentis and 605 on the turn that the pair had covered yesterday. I went to Trin with the aim of getting the westbound Glacier there but soon gave up as the light was poor, there was a very cold wind whistling through the gorge and I couldn’t get far from the station due to deep snow. After much faffing about, I ended up taking an unsatisfactory shot of the pair leaving Chur. It was almost a parallel departure with 646, unusually working freight 5135, passing seconds before the Glacier left.
Next stop was Bonaduz for a long and exhausting trek through the snow to the Rhein gorge overlook. At least it was worth the effort as the sun came out for an hour or so but didn’t stay long enough to get the Glacier returning. Back at Bonaduz, 605 appeared on cue with freight 5152 from Samedan but freight 5155, in the opposite direction, was a light engine.
That was it for the day, a frustrating experience but not a total disaster.

Wed 07 Mar 2012A glorious sunny day but with very little Ge4/4i action. 603 and 610 worked an early morning extra to Arosa then hung around until late afternoon before returning. The other active loco, 605, was confined to barracks for the day. According to a member of railway staff I spoke to, 602 left Landquart today bound for the Museum at Luzern, where it will spend the next five years. 602 had been reported in use recently.
With no Ge4/4is to photograph, I set off to the Disentis line in pursuit of the day’s most unusual working, 646 on the morning Ilanz goods, bagging it in both directions between Castrisch and Ilanz and getting 704 on the return Disentis goods as a bonus. Next stop was the gorge east of Trin where I’d missed the afternoon Disentis goods yesterday but successfully photted it today with favourite 707 in charge.
The last couple of hours were spent north of Bonaduz on the Albula line where a couple of substitutions were noted; 646 turned up on RE1149 to St.Moritz vice ugly sister 649 and to redress the balance, graffiti liveried 633 replaced standard red 631 on freight 5152. I’d hazard a guess that 631 worked something else back from the Engadin as it’s shown as starting from Landquart in the morning.
All in all a very good day with a number of priority shots in the can.

Thu 08 Mar 2012With no Ge4/4is on particularly useful workings and poor weather forecast, it was time to try something different, and I travelled up to Spinas, at the south end of the Albula Tunnel to try a shot of a train leaving the tunnel. A fairly unproductive hour was spent there, getting a southbound freight and a passenger in each direction. Then, I continued into the Engadin, where there were occasional sunny spells between snow showers, travelling to Bever via Pontresina and back.
New ABe4/14 suburban unit 3101 was seen stabled at Samedan, looking very similar at first glance to the 35xx series ABe8/12 Allegras already on the railway but with one unpowered driving trailer and a pair of articulated trailers in the middle, hence the unusual 14 axles.
Three hours were then spent near Bever, getting two out of sixteen trains in sun, including 618 on the return freight from Serneus to Pontresina, consisting of three wagons with swap-body type hoppers. By lunchtime the sun was getting too far round and I headed east to try a shot of the impressive but difficult to photograph bridge at Cinuos-Chel-Brail. Unfortunately it was too difficult to get a good shot so I left to return to Filisur via Sagliains, Klosters, Landquart and Chur.

Fri 09 Mar 2012Although the forecast was good, it took until early afternoon for the cloud to clear properly. I spent most of the day on the Disentis line at various locations between Reichenau-Tamins and Ilanz finishing on the first section of the Albula line out of Reichenau-T.
Ge4/4i 605 was booked to work the Glacier Expresses west of Chur and duly appeared. However the morning Ilanz goods was a Ge4/4ii instead of the diagrammed Ge4/4i. Another Ge4/4ii worked the afternoon Disentis goods, normally booked for a Ge6/6ii. The midday Ilanz goods, booked for a Ge4/4ii didn’t run.

Sat 10 Mar 2012A superb day right from the start when 703 appeared on RE1120 vice co-op carrier bag liveried 641. 703 also worked RE1129 before the rotten tomato resumed its booked duties. 610 was on the second Bergün - Preda shuttle turn as expected and kept me busy most of the day. There were no other surprises until the evening when an ABe8/12 went south past Filisur on RE1169 but it turns out that it was a booked move in preparation for tomorrow’s lunacy (the Engadin ski marathon).

Sun 11 Mar 2012Probably the least typical day I’ve ever spent on the Rhätischebahn with hardly anything working to its normal diagram. The reason was the Engadin Ski Marathon, a bizarre ritual where thousands of normally sane people tie sticks to their feet and throw themselves off mountains. Numerous special trains ran to and from the Engadin via the Vereina and Albula routes and the normal Pontresina - Scuol-Tarasp service was replaced by frequent shuttles between the finishing line at S-chanf Marathon and St. Moritz.
As it was my last day and I wanted to be sure of getting away on time, I steered well clear of the Engadin but even then wasn’t immune to the fallout. The day started with a run down to Chur on RE1120, usually a Ge4/4iii but, just for today, worked by an ABe8/14 unit. I took the opportunity of sitting at the front of the unit and got a driver’s eye view of the line. The biggest surprise of the day came very early in the journey when we crossed the Landwasser Viaduct - no check rails!
After first dropping my bag in left luggage at Chur, i spent the whole day on the Reichenau-Tamins - Disentis/Mustér line where a number of trains were worked by the Ge4/4iis and push-pull sets that normally shuttle back and forth in the Engadin. That wasn’t the reason for going there. Ge4/4is 605 and 610 were also pressed into service double heading Disentis - Scuol-Tarasp trains and Ge6/6ii 707 worked the Glacier Expresses.
After a brilliant start it rapidly clouded over and the Ge4/4is and 707 both passed in the gloom. I decided on a ride up to Disentis and back to fill the time until 707 returned with the eastbound Glacier and was surprised to find the sun out at the top end of the line. Attempts to find a good location to photograph 707 failed, although I did get a pleasant shot of MGB 106 leaving Disentis. Even more frustration followed on the return to Chur as the sky had largely cleared and my original planned location to photograph 707, on the bridge at Reichenau was in sun.
There was no time to stop as I had to get back to Zürich for my flight home, catching the IR service that follows the IC in the hope it would be less crowded, which it was. And so another trip came to an end with plenty of pictures in the can and plenty more still to be got. It looks like I’ll have to go back again!
