A ludicrously early start got me to Cheriton in time to catch the 05:48 shuttle sous la Manche to Calais. The drive across northern France, southern Belgium and western Germany was long, slow and very boring but eventually I reached the Koblenz - Trier line at Pünderich, south of Bullay, just before 14:00.

The weather was generally overcast but there were occasional breaks in the cloud and one of the eighteen trains seen in the next two and a half hours actually passed in sun. By amazing good fortune it was an iron ore train hauled by a pair of 151s, something I’d never managed to photograph before. Six freights were seen in total, all southbounds and all hauled by DB locos of classes 140, 151, 152 and 185. Three ICs were seen, all hauled by 181s, and the RE and RB trains were a mixture of class 425 or 426 units and 143s on push-pull sets. On one train, the whole set was the wrong way round with the driving trailer at the south end while on another the set was the right way round but the loco was coupled to the driving trailer end. A set with 143s top and tail was also seen.

By 16:00 the cloud had thickened considerably and there was no chance of any more sun. I waited for late running IC137 and then gave up and went to find my hotel, near Simmern. After such an early start, I needed some kip.

Wed 07 Sep 2011

With another dull day forecast there was little point in hanging around in Rheinland-Pfalz so I carried on south-eastwards to the Allgäubahn in southern Bayern, a horrible journey on busy Autobahns in pouring rain much of the way.

The temporary closure of the Oberstdorf branch for engineering work means that ALEX trains are running through to Lindau without dropping off an Oberstdorf portion at Immenstadt. That means five coach trains west of Immenstadt, which make much better photos in the glorious Allgäu landscape than the usual two or three coach sets. That’s not all, until Friday all four pairs of München - Zürich ECs are also running via Kempten.

I spent the afternoon around Oberstaufen where, against the odds, the sun actually broke through on a few occasions when there wasn’t a train about. Everything ran as expected with the usual 223s on the ALEX trains and 612s on all the DB Regio workings. The ECs were worked by pairs of Mühldorf 218s and both trains seen appeared to be making an effort to lose as little time as possible. During these diversions the trains aren’t retimed, despite the routing via Kempten taking about 30 minutes longer than the usual Memmingen line. Instead, they just run late. The eastbound EC appeared to be going for an on time arrival at München and made a superb noise climbing up to Harbatshofen, a good five minutes earlier than expected, with the locos working flat out.

Thu 08 Sep 2011

Another dull day for the most part although it did brighten up for a period in the late afternoon and I got one shot in sun before the light collapsed again. Everything ran as expected with four different class 223s seen on the ALEX trains and three pairs of 218s on the ECs. All the other passengers were DB class 612s. One unusual working was seen, a class 218 hauling a test coach east in the late afternoon. It passed just as I reached Zell and I didn’t manage to get the number.

Fri 09 Sep 2011

Today’s forecast was reasonably optimistic and by 09:30 the cloud was breaking up nicely north of Oberstaufen. EC191 passed in sun and then everything stopped. Neither the eastbound ALEX, due at Oberstaufen at 10:40, nor the DMU, due in the opposite direction at virtually the same time, appeared. After around half an hour of wondering what was going on, a German photographer nearby phoned a friend on the railway and was told that there had been an accident somewhere, that nothing would move for a couple of hours and that EC193 would run via Memmingen, despite that line being officially closed for engineering work.

An air ambulance had gone up the valley towards Harbatshofen some time earlier so I set off in that direction. There were firemen and police swarming all over the line at Harbatshofen but, thankfully, no wrecked train. Continuing west, the ALEX was found hiding in the woods near Ellhofen, east of Röthenbach with more firemen hanging around nearby looking bored. I concluded that whatever had happened had happened at Harbatshofen and then settled down to wait for the ALEX to move. It eventually passed just after 12:00, 90 minutes down. Then everything stopped again for over an hour before trains started running normally again, around 13:20.

There was always the possibility that all the ECs would run via Memmingen and so it was a great relief to see EC194 appear. The remainder of the day’s EC trains also ran via Kempten. The afternoon was spent around Harbatshofen with all but two trains passing in full sun. Not a bad day overall, in spite of the three hour break.

Sat 10 Sep 2011

The good weather continued through the day with wall to wall sunshine right up to just before sunset when a cloud took out my last shot of the day.

Although the ECs reverted to their normal route from today, there were still the ALEX services to photograph. As it was a Saturday there was also a 218 on the München - Lindau bike train RE57468, returning as RE57469 and another on the afternoon ECS from Kempten to Lindau. There were also a couple of specials, from Mühldorf to Lindau and back behind a 218 and from Nürnberg to Lindau and back with Bavarian S3/6 Pacific 18.478 and banker V100.1365 (211.365) in charge from and to Augsburg.

For most of the day my luck held and I managed to stumble upon the two specials and the ECS more by luck than judgement. In the late afternoon I moved from familiar territory east of Hergatz to try a couple of new positions between Hergatz and Lindau and managed to miss both return specials and two 218 worked push-pulls in quick succession.

Sun 11 Sep 2011

Another glorious sunny day in the Allgäu with only a few wispy clouds interrupting the almost unbroken blue sky. There were no specials today, just the regular ALEX trains, the early EC and the bike train.

After photographing the 15:19 from München, I left the Allgäu and drove north to the Frankenwald, north-east of Nürnberg. The day ended with a bang, or more correctly a lot of flashes and bangs as much of the journey was through a massive thunderstorm with thunder, lightning, torrential rain, hailstones, strong winds and visibility down to almost nothing. The contrast to the sunny weather further south couldn’t have been starker.

Mon 12 Sep 2011

The weather took some time to clear, which was fortunate as I also took a long time to get going after yesterday evening’s nightmare drive. First stop was Neuhaus(Pegnitz), on the line from Nürnberg to Marktredwitz, where the plan was to catch a local train to Hersbruck and back to look for photospots.

Unfortunately there were no local trains running due to bridge work, only REs and buses. I decided to give the bus a miss and waited for almost an hour for the next RE, which was a pair of class 610 units, a new class for me, whoopee! The RE was running late and only just gave me enough time at Hersbruck to buy a ticket back to Neuhaus before the return train arrived. It was another pair of 610s but I was getting thoroughly fed up with them by now. There used to be quite a number of good locations on this section but that was 25 years ago, before the jungle took over. I did note a few places worthy of further investigation but not many.

The next challenge was to find a train worth photting. Loco hauled passengers are virtually non-existent these days and being a Monday there wasn’t much freight booked to run. The delay caused by the locals being bustituted meant that by the time I reached the lineside, just east of Hersbruck, I had probably missed one of the few freights that should have run according to the Guterzugkursbuch. The remaining freight on the Marktredwitz line appeared very close to right time and both the freights expected on the Nürnberg - Amberg line also appeared, although the train from Plzen was around an hour late. There were also two additional freights, both formed of hopper wagons and heading west, one from the Marktredwitz line at lunchtime and the other on the Amberg line in the late afternoon. All the freights were hauled by class 232s except one and that was a 233.

The only loco hauled passengers in the area are on the Nürnberg - Praha route, worked by ALEX class 223s between Nürnberg and Plzen via Amberg, Schwandorf, Furth i Wald and Domazlice. Both afternoon trains were seen but the train from Praha was almost an hour late. All the other passenger sevices are DMUs with class 610 predominating. There were also a number of class 612s on various services including anything to/from Dresden. A single class 628 was also seen on the Amberg line.

Tue 13 Sep 2011

Another day on the lines north and east of Hersbruck near Nürnberg. Many of the freights ran close to their booked times but there were one or two that either didn’t show up or were so far off their booked times that I didn’t see them.

The weather was not in a co-operative mood and the sun only appeared briefly in the middle of the day, catching a late running freight at Velden. Unfortunately the freight was running wrong line due to engineering work, so the opportunity was wasted. As the afternoon progressed, the cloud got thicker and by 15:30 I gave up and set off for my next destination in the Czech Republic.

Fri 16 Sep 2011

After returning from the Czech Republic and staying near Ulm overnight, I continued westwards to the Stuttgart - Singen line in the picturesque Neckar Valley on the eastern edge of the Black Forest. I’d been here before in April 2010 but Spring had hardly got underway then and most of the trees were still bare. This time the colours were starting to turn autumnal and there were class 101s on some Stuttgart - Zürich ICs as well as class 120s I’d seen last year.

Apart from the 101s appearing on some trains, little had changed since my 2010 visit. The two-hourly Stuttgart - Zürich service was still all loco hauled and the Stuttgart - Singen RE services were still worked by 146.2s on push-pull sets. The other REs were class 425 or 426 EMUs, including RE19040 that starts from Schaffhausen.

The sky started clear but by mid afternoon the light was getting hazy and it clouded up around 16:00. This was also consistent with last year and left me still needing the same late afternoon/early evening shots I’d failed to get the last time around.

Sat 17 Sep 2011

Another day on the Stuttgart - Singen line. It should have been an interesting day as two IC trains each way were booked for class 181 electrics, a class not traditionally seen south of Stuttgart. Perhaps the diagrams have changed because three of the four trains in question were seen and all were worked by 120.155. In fact all the ICs were hauled by class 101 or 120 locos, although each class didn’t always appear on the expected trains.

The REs to/from Singen were all worked by 146.2s on push-pull sets while the REs to/from Rottweil were 425 units.

Only two freights were seen, both hauled by pairs of class 185 locos and both seen within 45 minutes of each other at lunchtime.

The weather forecast was poor but there was actually a fair amount of blue sky around in the morning and a couple of shots were bagged in sun in the Neckar Valley between Sulz and Oberndorf.

By late morning the cloud had become fairly solid and I moved north to Eutingen im Gäu where the weather looked better. Three hours there produced nothing in sun although a heavily graffitied class 425 did pass in good light.

Later I moved on to a spot north of Herrenberg where the town’s impressive Stiftskirche dominates shots of trains leaving for the north. The sun was more co-operative there and shots of a 146 and 120 were taken in good light before the sky filled in. At that point I decided to cut and run for my final hotel at Sohren in the Hunsruck.

Sun 18 Sep 2011

The last day of my trip was spent on the Koblenz - Trier line. Nothing much had changed since in the two weeks since my previous visit with the usual mix of 143s on the front, back and both ends of push-pull sets working most regional services and 181s on the Luxembourg ICs.

Two specials were seen going north at lunchtime, one behind a 110 and the other hauled by Centralbahn’s ex-ÖBB class 1042.

There were also a number of freights but only two of them worked by DB locos.

Although some sun was forecast there weren’t actually many breaks in the cloud and by 14:30 it was totally overcast. At that point I gave up and set off on the long drive home.
