A quieter day than yesterday but still good with a number of shots in the sun. Most of the day was spent on line 160. The first destination was Podkrivan for a 750 on a westbound passenger and a pair of 736s on an eastbound freight.
Then it off to the overbridge at Gemer, north of Tornala, where the same pair of 736s turned up light engine. After getting the midday westbound passenger it was time to see if I could get a room at the Hotel Kras in Roznava. I did wonder if it was acting as an overspill for the ice hockey junket in Kosice but it wasn’t and I got in without any difficulty.
The afternoon was spent at Jovice, where I’d tried to get a shot in sun on a number of occasions last trip but had failed every time. Nothing happened for two hours then, at 15:00 precisely, the floodgates opened and four 751 hauled freights rolled westwards in the next 30 minutes, three of them in full sun. While I was waiting, I noticed that the timetable revision on 1 May had all but wiped out the local passenger service at the east end of line 160 and a lot of the trains that were in the December 2010 book either don’t run or only cover part of their previous route. The service was bad enough before but now most of the intermediate stations are down to two trains a day.
After overdosing on 751s, I needed a goggle on CD stock (i.e. graffiti free) to finish the day off. Fortunately I knew where to find one and drove up to Telgart on line 173 to get R810 descending from the summit. The road parallels the Roznava - Dobsina branch, closed to passengers some time ago but clearly still open for freight. The principal source of traffic appears to be timber from Dobsina.
