I had planned to spend the day exploring the Humenne - Medzilaborce line and checking out a hunch that there are more freights than the diagrams show. However, it was expected to be the last really sunny day for a while and it seemed a shame to waste it on such a speculative venture, so I headed west to have another go at the shots I’d failed to get on Saturday at the east end of line 160. With all the westbound freights scheduled to run except the oil train, which was 736 hauled anyway and therefore low priority, it couldn’t possibly go wrong.

The first shot was of the westbound passenger near Hrhov and it was even better than expected with the light at the perfect angle and a clean, red and white loco on red and white stock. Then it was off to Jovice where absolutely nothing appeared westbound during the five hours I was there. Of course, when the light had gone too far round and I gave up and started moving to a spot for the afternoon passenger, the stone train appeared. Then the sky, which had up to then been mainly blue, suddenly filled with cloud before either the pick-up or the passenger arrived.

So I might as well have given up at 11:00 and gone back to Humenne to explore the Medzilaborce line anyway.

I had decided to stay in Lucenec for a couple of nights but struggled to find a hotel. The first two I tried were full and the third, the hotel Slovan near the station, only had one room and only for one night. Everywhere else I’d been the hotels seemed almost empty, with only a handful of guests, probably because everyone was in Lucenec for some obscure reason.
