With BA staff balloting for yet another strike and Czech Airlines no longer serving the UK, it was off to Gatwick to catch easyJet’s 06:30 departure to Praha. We left on time and arrived 10 minutes early at 09:15. Everything went smoothly at Praha, where I collected my hire car and was on the road before 10:00. After checking into the Hotel Sokolsky Dum in Slavkov u Brna (booked through Booking.com), the rest of the day was spent photographing on line 340, east of Brno, in glorious sunshine.
340 is still a difficult line to do due to the poor timing of the trains but when the sun shines, at least you have a chance. I was lucky that both the Nemotice workings had attractive locos (754.041 and 754.045). It was disappointing to see that 754.067, previously one of the most photogenic locos on the system, had lost its supershine blue and yellow livery and joined the ranks of the corporate bland while drab queens 754.007 and 754.008 remain in traffic in weathered grey and green.

I started off with the intention of spending the morning on the line between Uherske Hradiste and Luhacovice and then returning to the area around Brankovice and Nemotice for the afternoon but ended up spending the whole day on the Luhacovice line. 754.013 and 754.067 took turns at working the fast trains between Stare Mesto and Luhacovice with 754.037 appearing on afternoon Brno - Bylnice, a train that’s only loco hauled on Fridays. All the stopping passengers were worked by units of classes 810, 814 or 842. There was quite a lot of thin cloud around all day with thicker stuff blotting out the sun completely from time to time. Despite this, I got a reasonable number of well lit shots.

The weather wasn’t conducive to good photography but I stopped briefly at Vesky to see what was working the Luhacovice trains before continuing over the border into Slovakia. Slovak report here.

Back in Czecho after 2 weeks in Slovakia (Slovak report here). I continued where I’d left off, on the Stare Mesto - Luhacovice line, this time in glorious sunshine. The only surprise was 742.100 substituting for a unit. I stayed the night at the Hotel u Velehradu in Modra, near Stare Mesto (booked through Booking.com).

The final day of the trip dawned grey and overcast in Modra. There was brightness in the east so I headed for the Luhacovice line. By the time I got there the edge of the cloud was a lot further east and disappearing into the distance rapidly. With no chance of the sun there, I headed north then west in hope of finding some light on the way back to Praha.
Around Pardubice it brightened up and the afternoon was spent in hazy sunshine at Pardubice-Opocinek on the Praha - Ceska Trebova main line. Passenger traffic was heavy, with locos of several different classes seen, and there were a good number of freights as well.
Train Os5022 was running late so the 471 that had just arrived at Pardubice from Praha turned round quickly and worked from Pardubice - Prelouc in the path of the delayed train. Eventually 163.026 appeared, running approximately in the path of Os8616 to Praha, which should have had the 471. The two must have swapped round again at Prelouc because 163.026 returned east on Os5027 as booked.
Also saw my first 380 today but it took me by surprise and I failed to phot it.
