After a couple of days in the Vosges it was time to move on to Germany for a visit to the Gäubahn, as the Stuttgart - Singen main line is known. I’d written off this line some time ago when the Stuttgart - Zürich InterCity services went over to ICE operation. Following serious problems with the ICE sets, all the ICs are now loco hauled again, mainly by 120s but with the odd 110 thrown in for good measure. There are also some 146s working push-pull sets between Stuttgart and Singen and a few freights as well.
This was my first visit to the area since the mid 1970s so much of the first day was spent finding photo locations and often missing the trains I would have liked to photograph. I did get a few good shots though, including a very pleasant surprise to end the day, 110 210 on IC 283. The weather helped with virtually unbroken sunshine all day, although the light was a bit hazy at first (volcanic dust?).
I stayed at the Hotel an der Glatt in Hopfau, a few km from the line and near to Sulz am Neckar.

A superb day on the Gäubahn with all the ICs worked by 120s except IC282. That had 110 210 so I wasn’t complaining at all. The weather was generally good although it clouded up in the middle of the afternoon then cleared again. There were no freights today although a northbound ballast with 2016 907 took me by surprise first thing in the morning. All the Stuttgart - Singen REs were 146s on double-deck push-pull sets (loco at the north end) again while the Stuttgart - Rottweil REs were solid 425s. Sightings below...

Another glorious morning on the Gäubahn before heading east to Altmühltal. After a weekend of solid 146s on double-deck push-pull sets on the Stuttgart - Singen trains, the pattern broke down with RE19606 formed of a 146 on a single deck push-pull set and RE19610 formed of a 425 and a 426 EMU. No change on the ICs with 120s on everything, including one still in orientrot livery.
The journey to Altmühltal took longer than expected, largely due to an hour or so wasted looking for locations between Ansbach and Treuchtlingen. East of Treuchtlingen was far better. A full day in Altmühltal. In addition to the heavy freight traffic, the local passenger service was also of interest, being operated by 111s on double-deck push-pull sets. Unusually for Germany, there was no consistency in which end the loco was coupled and any train could turn up facing any way. I had difficulty reading the small numbers on the 111s from a distance as they appear to have smaller digits than most of the freight locos and the running number gets lost in all the UIC guff.
The freights were the real stars, with no less than 38 seen over the course of the day. DBS 152s and 185s handled the majority of trains but there were several other classes as well and also a few locos belonging to other railways or independent operators.
I spent most of the day within a few km of Dollnstein with a couple of hours around midday closer to Solnhofen. Once again, the weather was co-operative most of the day and many megapixels were recorded.

Another superb, sunny day in Altmühltal. Traffic levels were even better with 49 freights seen in a 12 hour period. Photographing them was a different matter with almost half escaping unrecorded. It was amazing the way that traffic would flow when I was changing positions and then dry up once I’d arrived. No complaints though, I did manage to photograph a lot of trains.
I started off around Dollnstein again before moving west to a spot just east of Solnhofen in the middle of the day. The early afternoon was spent west of Pappenheim with a return to a location near Dollnstein for the last couple of hours.

My last morning in Altmühltal was spent around Dollnstein. Once again, the weather was co-operative with a little cloud first thing and then clear skies.
It was time to move on, although I’d have been happy to stay longer in Altmühltal.
At 11:00, I left for the Mühldorf area, stopping briefly near Vilsbiburg for a shot of a 218 on one of the few loco worked passengers on the Mühldorf - Landshut line.
The rest of the day was spent around Kastl, on the Mühldorf - Burghausen line, photographing the procession of afternoon freights from Kastl and Wackerwerk to Mühldorf. The line was closed for engineering work between 07:00 and 15:00 so nothing could run early and there was a parade of freights after the blockade was lifted. It was nice to see that some 217s were still in traffic. I stayed in the Gasthof zum Kirchenwirt in Seibersdorf, a few km from Simbach.

My first full day around Mühldorf. The Burghausen branch was closed until 15:00 for engineering work so I went looking for spots on the Mühldorf - München line and ended up just east of Dorfen Bahnhof, or should it be Dorfen Bahnhof Bahnhof? Everything appeared as expected except for the ÖBB train, which was 2 hours late.
Next stop was Salling, north of Tittmoning-Wiesmühl on the Mühldorf - Freilassing line, for the afternoon binliner. This line sees little freight so it was a surprise to find a train of oil tanks heading south as I drove up to the spot. The bins turned up at the expected time but with a pair of 294s in place of the expected 225.
The rest of the afternoon was spent near Kastl for the procession of westbound trains in the late afternoon.

One of the strangest workings around Mühldorf runs on a Saturday morning. Train RE27005 from Mühldorf to Passau is formed of a class 218 on a rake of Inter City coaches. These are then attached to train IC1887 at Passau and go forward to Hamburg Altona. RE27005 and its southbound counterpart, RE27004, are the only loco hauled passengers on the Passau line and well worth a look.
I found a spot to photograph the train near Eggenfelden.

Back on the Mühldorf system recovering from a weekend of 1116 overload on the München - Salzburg and Salzburg - Linz lines. Unfortunately the weather had taken a turn for the worse with cloud and frequent showers for most of the day. Traffic levels were excellent, especially for a Monday, with a number of additional workings in addition to the regular trains.

A very frustrating day. The weather was generally good and there were plenty of freight trains but the clouds had developed an amazing knack of being in front of the sun virtually every time a train went past. The entire day was spent between Burghausen and Tüssling.

My last day at Mühldorf. The weather behaved a lot better with no cloud problems all day. The trains were the main problem, particularly the lack of loaded trains from Wackerwerk in the morning. An excellent afternoon at Tüssling helped to make up for the disappointment. I left around 19:30 and drove to Leipheim, near Ulm, for the night. I stayed at the Axxe Motel at the Leipheim Süd motorway services.
