An excellent day weather and train wise. The morning was spent on the main line between Kempten and Kaufbeuren where almost everything ran according to plan. The main exceptions were the two ECs around midday, which were both single headed. Two 218s on a six coach train looks a bit OTT so this was improvement in my opinion. The other exception was also for the better, 233.572 grinding up the bank towards Günzach on a westbound CWR train, filling the air with the most wonderful noise.
The afternoon was spent on the Oberstdorf branch. ALEX seemed to be getting by without any exotic traction on the München - Lindau run or the Oberstdorf branch. Everything seen was worked by standard 223s. There were some strange goings on though. The 13:19 from München, due in Oberstdorf at 15:38, was almost 50 minutes late, arriving around 15 minutes after it should have gone back to Immenstadt. Remarkably, it had made up all but six minutes by the time it had done another round trip but then lost another ten minutes turning round at Oberstdorf. That ten minutes cost me a shot in sun, one of only two lost all day.
Also worth noting is that the Oberstdorf - Augsburg IC, which should return with the same loco in the afternoon didn’t. It went north behind a very smart 218.435 but returned with something a lot scruffier.
