Germany & Switzerland April/May 2013 Day by Day

Mon 06 May 2013

Time for a change of scene and a trip across the border, two borders actually, to Switzerland. The forecast was poor, so I was planning to take my time over the journey. However, the sky was clear in Lindau, where I’d stayed the night, and looked fairly clear to the south as well. I proceeded to Sevelen, a few km north of Sargans with utmost haste, which turned out not to be very fast due to the motorway vignettes that had to be purchased and stuck in various places, single line working through the tunnel behind Bregenz and an inconsiderate Romanian trucker who blocked me in while I was getting my Swiss vignette and disappeared for 15 minutes.

Down at Sevelen, things were looking fairly good. There was a lot of cloud to the south but it was relatively clear to the north for the shot of a train with the wall of mountains behind. After an hour or so the cloud rolled in and I went north, eventually finding a couple of shots near Rüthi that were clear of horrible concrete electricity poles. The sun lasted there until around 14:00, by which time the sky was completely overcast and I returned to Sevelen to check out some more positions. Before long the rain started and I gave up for the day.

Trains were pretty much as expected with the Chur - St. Gallen workings, the reason I was there, solid Re4/4ii. Even better, Swiss Express liveried 11108 was one of the locos in use. Railjets were, obviously, worked by ÖBB 1116s and the Sargans - Buchs locals were some sort of converted dishwasher on wheels. The Chur - St. Gallen trains are supposed to go over to class 511 units in June, if not before, and 511.110 was stabled at Sargans in the late afternoon but wasn’t seen to move.

Four freights were seen, generally fitting in with what was timetabled but with the welcome problem of not knowing which of the two southbounds that passed in less than ten minutes was the one that was supposed to run at that time. The morning trains were both Re6/6 worked with Re4/4iis on the two afternoon workings.
