A lazy day beside the pool! That was the ever growing pool of rainwater beside my parking spot next to the Shaffhausen - Zürich line south of Eglisau. It rained all morning so there was no point in doing anything apart from sitting in the car watching the trains go by. Only a visit from the Border Police livened things up. Fortunately alles was in ordnung and they soon departed.
Passenger services were back to normal after Thursday’s holiday with 460.054 on the Shaffhausen - Zürich IRs and 450s on the Rafz - Pfäffikon S-Bahn services. Interestingly, none of the 450s that went to Pfäffikon came back in the seven hours I was there so the diagram must be fairly complex. The REs were still 511s with the same units shuttling back and forth all day and the Stuttgart Zürich ICs were the booked mix of one 420 and two 421s.
There were a number of freights but only one stone train all day, and that was worked by an Re6/6 rather than the hoped for Ae6/6. By mid afternoon I’d given up hope of getting an Ae6/6 and went to Bülach where the same three locos were in exactly the same place as the previous day. I got the impression that the Ae6/6s were only used when nothing else was available and traffic would have to pick up significantly before they would be turned out.
No point in hanging around then, so it was off to Germany and the start of the long journey home.

After yesterday, anything was going to be an anticlimax and today was the anticlimax of anticlimaxes. I’d travelled west to the Schaffhausen area in the hope of getting some of the reactivated Ae6/6s on stone trains in the Eglisau area. However, nothing was running as it was a public holiday, something that had escaped my notice when planning the trip. As well as the lack of freights, passenger services were in weekend mode meaning everything except the Zürich - Stuttgart ICs was worked by shiny plastic units. As an example of what Switzerland will be like in a few years time it was educational and depressing - the S-Bahn trains were 511s, the REs were 511s, the IRs were 511s and the locals were 526s. I wouldn’t have been too surprised if a 511 had turned up hauling a stone train! The weather was poor as well, just to cap it all.
The day was spent looking for spots, in the unlikely event that the sun shines tomorrow, and started with a train ride from Hüntwangen-Wil to Niederglatt and back, on 511s of course. The best spots appeared to be around Eglisau and south towards Glattfelden and most of the day was spent walking the footpaths in that area looking at potential positions, which turned out to be few and far between. In the late afternoon I had a look at a few potential spots on the Winterthur - Schaffhausen line, a couple of which looked promising for the three late afternoon Lion workings, which weren’t running today, of course.

A great day by any standards. Not only was the weather clear and sunny but both Swiss Express liveried Re4/4iis were on the Chur - St. Gallen circuit as well. The odds against that must be pretty slim.
I started at Sevelen before moving on to the spot north of Sargans in the late morning. An early afternoon move in the Chur direction found nowhere clear of big ugly poles so I went north and spent the rest of the day around Oberriet and Altstätten instead.
As well as 11108 and 11109, the other locos on the Chur - St. Gallen’s were 11149, 11172 and 11303. The 511 wasn’t seen. Freight traffic was a little disappointing with only one long freight being seen, the oil tanks at 09:30. Everything else was a bit short.

Although the forecast was similar to the previous day, the sun barely managed to break through the clouds at all. there were a few short breaks around midday but none coincided with a train and the best I got on anything was half sun. Once again I started south of Sevelen, moving to a spot just north of Sargans in the late morning and back to Sevelen in the early afternoon. When it became clear that the sun had gone for good, I walked to Buchs, checking out the photo possibilities along the way then caught a train back.
Trains ran pretty much as expected with Re4/4iis 11108, 11138, 11141, 11149 and 11303 covering the Chur - St. Gallen trains. The dishwasher conversions used on Sargans - Buchs locals were finally identified as class 526 after a thorough inspection of one at Sargans tonight. The number does appear on the unit, in light grey type on a dirty white background making it very difficult to read.
There was a fair variety of power on the freights seen, including a diminutive class 923 on three wagons, BLS “Brownie” 171 and green 11646, complete with original round lights as well as round wheels.
