The forecast was poor and there was an engineering occupation between Bousov and Kremze to contend with, so I wasn’t expecting a lot from today. However, things got off to a promising start when I awoke to the splutter of an unsilenced 751 leaving Prachatice just before 05:00 with the Volary - Cicenice pick-up goods.
There was a lot of high cloud around, as yesterday, and the forecast thunderstorms did develop but every shot I attempted throughout the day was in full or almost full sun, right up to the final shot taken at 19:14. The engineering occupation changed things around, meaning that the 10:07 off Ceske Budejovice was a pair of 814s but the 12:07, normally a four car 810 + 010 + 010 + 810 formation, was loco hauled. 754.022 and 749.252 shared the work, each doing two out and backs, so there were still four loco hauled trains each way. Timekeeping also suffered with delays progressively increasing throughout the day until the final trains were around 30 minutes behind schedule.
I didn’t have a chance to check out the 751 returning from Cicenice but from what a German photter told me yesterday, I’d guess it was 751.316. A very faded 751.232 worked the Volary - Kajov pick-up goods although it appeared to run light engine as far as Cerna v Posumavi, picked up five loaded timber wagons there and then returned immediately to Volary. The Ceske Budejovice - Kajov pick-up goods was worked by 753.771, the first time I’ve seen one of them in this part of the world and a massive improvement on the pairs of cab-to-cab 742s that used to work these trains.
Overall, an excellent day. I’d almost forgotten they existed.
