Sun 29 April 2012

The second day of the summer loco haulage season on the Ceske Budejovice - Nove Udoli line. In theory the four out and back turns booked for loco haulage should have been worked by class 754s instead of the class 749s that have traditionally worked these services. Reality was somewhat different with the first and last trains worked by 749.121 (a Praha engine) and 749.252 respectively. The second and third trains were worked by plain green 754.039 and 754.022 respectively.

There was a lot of high cloud around which took the edge off the light for most of the day. One of the few shots taken in bright sunshine was 749.252 at the number one location on my wanted list, on the curve in the woods approaching Stozec from the Cerny Kriz direction, so I was relatively un-grumpy at the end of the day.

Mon 30 April 2012

The forecast was poor and there was an engineering occupation between Bousov and Kremze to contend with, so I wasn’t expecting a lot from today. However, things got off to a promising start when I awoke to the splutter of an unsilenced 751 leaving Prachatice just before 05:00 with the Volary - Cicenice pick-up goods.

There was a lot of high cloud around, as yesterday, and the forecast thunderstorms did develop but every shot I attempted throughout the day was in full or almost full sun, right up to the final shot taken at 19:14. The engineering occupation changed things around, meaning that the 10:07 off Ceske Budejovice was a pair of 814s but the 12:07, normally a four car 810 + 010 + 010 + 810 formation, was loco hauled. 754.022 and 749.252 shared the work, each doing two out and backs, so there were still four loco hauled trains each way. Timekeeping also suffered with delays progressively increasing throughout the day until the final trains were around 30 minutes behind schedule.

I didn’t have a chance to check out the 751 returning from Cicenice but from what a German photter told me yesterday, I’d guess it was 751.316. A very faded 751.232 worked the Volary - Kajov pick-up goods although it appeared to run light engine as far as Cerna v Posumavi, picked up five loaded timber wagons there and then returned immediately to Volary. The Ceske Budejovice - Kajov pick-up goods was worked by 753.771, the first time I’ve seen one of them in this part of the world and a massive improvement on the pairs of cab-to-cab 742s that used to work these trains.

Overall, an excellent day. I’d almost forgotten they existed.

Tue 01 May 2012

A glorious sunny day from start to finish, which should have been a warning that things were going to go wrong.

To cut a long story short, 754.039 failed somewhere at the west end of the line, either on the outward leg with the 06:07 from Ceske Budejovice or the return 09:17 from Nove Udoli. It was rescued by 754.022 which worked the 08:07 train west and returned on Os8115/4 hauling three coaches, the dead 754.039 and three more coaches. The rescue operation delayed Os8115/4 by more than an hour and the knock on effects were still being felt by the end of the day.

There were two 749s out during the day, 749.051 and 749.252 working the 10:07 and 14:07 trains from Ceske Budejovice respectively. It was good to see 051 again as it’s undoubtedly Ceske Budejovice’s best looking Grumpy. At Volary 751.232 and 751.316 were stabled in the station area, waiting for freight traffic to resume after the May Day holiday.
