With the 749 hauled trains likely to finish this year, another couple of days on the Ceske Budejovice - Nove Udoli line seemed in order. There have been a few changes since I was last here, most notably the 06:07 from C. Bud and 09:17 return, which were loco hauled on my last visit in August, were a class 809 railbus today. The other three out and back turns were loco hauled with 749.253, 749.254 and 749.260 doing the honours today. 749.260 appeared to be on loan, or possibly stolen, and had “DKV Praha” stencilled on the cabside. I remember it better as a Letohrad engine but that was a few years ago.

742.284 was at Kajov this morning, presumably having worked in from Ceske Budejovice on the pick-up goods. CD Cargo blue 751.219 worked the Kajov - Volary pick-up and passed Horice at 11:14, more than an hour earlier than I’ve ever seen it before. The Viamont class 720 that was at Kajov in August has gone, along with the grain hoppers it was employed to shunt. The collection of preserved vehicles including an 0-6-0T and a 720 that were at Stozec have also disappeared.

Most of the day was dull and wet but eventually the rain stopped and by late afternoon the cloud was well broken. I went to a good location near Stozec for the last loco hauled from Ceske Budejovice but found it was already in shadow and had to settle for a much less attractive position nearby. Still, at least the shot was in sun. The return working was photographed approaching Stozec in a position that had previously been blocked by the preserved stock stabled there.

Thu 15 Sep 2011

The day started red and blue, turned hideously green and yellow in the middle but then ended magnificently red and blue again.

I took a gamble that the 06:07 from Ceske Bud would be a railbus again and went looking for the Cicenice - Volary pick-up goods instead. Red and blue 751.316 soon appeared at my chosen location near Blanice on two empty wagons and two vans, a long train for the line these days. Then it was off to Stozec, between Cerny Kriz and Nove Udoli where the railbus that had worked the 06:07 from CB was seen returning. Phew, I’d have been pig sick if it had been a loco and I’d missed it.

After photographing 749.254 approaching Nove Udoli on the 08:07 from CB, I headed east, stopping briefly at Cerna v Posumavi to see which loco was on the 10:07. The train eventually showed up 20 minutes late with an 814 instead. Never mind, on to Horice na Sumave to photograph 749.254 returning east. Then there was a very long wait before anything else of interest happened.

By that stage my list of six critical shots had been whittled down to one. I’d got two during the morning, another two were impossible unless the 06:07 was loco, which it wasn’t, and as I’d found out yesterday, another wasn’t lit at this time of year. That left the 14:07 approaching Horice to get. After seeing the 814 on the 10:07 I did even wonder whether it would be loco hauled.

Fortunately it was. The depot must have realised that this might be my last ever shot of a passenger train booked to be worked by a 749 and turned out their smartest engine, 749.051, looking magnificent in clean red and blue livery. The light was touch and go but the train passed in full sun. Gotcha! I hadn’t planned to do another shot but raced to Nova Pec to get another pic of this previously unphotographed loco at the best location on the line, again in superb light.

A wonderful day overall, despite only taking 5 shots and an 814 taking out a third of the loco hauled service at one fell swoop. I left for Germany well satisfied.
