A stupid o’clock departure from home saw me driving to Cheriton in time for the 05:48 shuttle through the tunnel to Frethun. Although it had been dry and clear in the UK, it was raining in northern France and it took 2 hours to get past Lille in stop-start traffic. The weather was just as bad in Belgium and Germany but at least everything kept moving at a reasonable pace. Six hours after leaving Calais, I finally arrived on the Koblenz - Trier line in the Mosel Valley near Bullay.
The weather wasn’t amenable to getting out of the car, let alone taking pictures, so I didn’t spend too long on the line. What I did see was in line with expectations; two ICs hauled by 181s, two REs formed of dosto push-pull sets with a 143 at the west end, a 425 or similar EMU on an RB service, a 628 on the Traben-Trarbach branch and a pair of 151s on a westbound ore train. No numbers were recorded.
Initial impressions of the line are that there are plenty of potential photo positions but they’re not particularly easy to get to and having a car isn’t that much of an advantage as it’s difficult to park and many positions appear to need a hike along vineyard tracks with no vehicular access. It’s all a bit academic unless the sun shines anyway.

A full day at the east end of the Mosel Valley around Winningen and Kobern-Gondorf. The weather forecast was fairly good but the cloud stayed stubbornly in place, except around Winningen where there were a few sunny breaks allowing a handful of reasonable phots during the afternoon.
The IC trains were solidly 181 worked, as expected, with blue/beige 181.211 putting in an appearance alongside its red classmates. Most RE trains were 143 worked with the loco invariably at the west end of the formation. The exception was RE12624 which was a 425 unit. 425s and 426s worked most of the RB trains but 143.114 appeared on several services and an another (unidentified) 143 worked another RB westwards in the early afternoon. One unexpected passenger was a westbound special worked by Centralbahn 10019, an ex-SBB Re4/4i.
Freight traffic was fairly heavy with 17 trains seen in 8 hours. The variety of traction was surprising with DB classes 140, 152, 155, 185 and 189 joined by an HGK 185, several Fret SNCF BB37000s, two RTS 2016 diesels, a CFL Cargo 4000 and a Rurtalbahn Class 66.

Any hope of a morning’s photography on the Moseltalbahn quickly faded when it dawned dull and wet. I decided to press on eastwards, finally stopping to have a look at the Hof - Reichenbach line after it stopped raining in the early afternoon. There’s plenty of photographic potential but I didn’t see any of the hoped for 232 hauled freights. Things were better on the passenger front with 218.468 turning up on the Leipzig - Hof diagram. Then it was on to Dresden for the night.

After driving a lot of miles over the past few days, I gave the car a well earned break and took to the trains for the day. My destination was the area around Kurort Rathen and Königstein in the Elbe Valley between Dresden and the Czech border. Despite a forecast of sunshine, the cloud remained stubbornly in place all day with only a few momentary breaks, none of which coincided with the passage of a train. That was surprising as there was no shortage of traffic. I noted around 70 loco worked trains during the day.
As expected, all the EC trains were worked by CD class 371 electrics and the half-hourly services on S-Bahn line 1 were all push-pull dosto sets with a class 143 at the east end of the formation. One observation of note is that several of the 143s have recently been repainted and now carry numbers on the ends without any check digit, e.g. 143 883, not 143 883-7. The full 37 digit UIC number with check digit is carried on the side of the loco.
Who said Sundays are no good for freight? There was certainly no shortage of traffic today with 24 freights noted. There were plenty of CD class 372s about but only two of their DB class 180 counterparts. The majority of DB trains were hauled by class 189s. Private operator ITL was very active with a number of trains hauled by class 185s and a 481 (Swiss registered class 145). RBH put in an appearance with triple headed class 143s on a coal train and an unidentified V100 was seen on a very long train of Skoda cars.

I’m getting fed up with the weather over here. For the third day since I left home the forecast has been for mainly sunny weather but the reality has been almost unbroken cloud for most of the day. At least today I got a handful of shots during a few short sunny breaks in the morning.
I spent the morning in the Elbe Valley around Königstein but gave up in the early afternoon as the last chances of any sun faded. The afternoon was spent buying maps in Dresden and taking a trip out to Tharandt and back, just for the hell of it.
If anything, the Elbe Valley was a bit quieter than on Sunday but there was still a healthy level of freight traffic worked by a variety of classes. The highlight was a blue Pressnitztalbahn 145 carrying the number 145.023 on the front. I thought it was unlikely that DB would have sold one of its 145s to a competitor and had a closer look when it came back. The UIC number was 145.083!
Passenger trains were as expected with an ÖBB 1216 on EN459 and CD 371s on all the EC trains. The S-bahn services were solid 143 but I did see a 145 on a dosto push-pull set stabled outside Dresden Hbf in the afternoon, presumably the loco that works a few Freiberg services for crew training in preparation for the class taking over S-Bahn line 1.

Another dull day. Instead of heading straight to the Liberec - Zawidow line in the Czech Republic, I decided to make more productive use of the day in Germany by having a look at the Hoyerswerda - Horka line, a good move as it turned out. I’d ridden the line in July and noted a number of potential photo positions that needed checking out from the lineside.
There wasn’t much freight traffic and the passenger trains were worked by the expected ODEG class 650 railcars but a few reasonable positions were found.
On arrival at Raspenava I discovered that the Liberec - Zawidow line was closed between 08:00 and 17:00 every day this week for engineering work. I’d hoped to spend the rest of the week here but now needed to rethink my plans.

Yet another cloudy start. With no trains to photograph on the Liberec - Zawidow line, I’d decided to return to Germany to spend the next three days on the Reichenbach - Plauen - Hof line. The plan survived for about half an hour before it was amended. There was a patch of blue sky to the north of Görlitz so I diverted to a spot on the Hoyerswerda - Horka line and ended up staying for the whole day.
Fortunately there were more freights than on Tuesday and two of them passed in full sun. By the standards of this trip, that made it a very good day! As well as the 233s on main line freights there was also a 298 on a pick up goods.

The first of several days on the Reichenbach - Hof line, superbly photogenic but with only a handful of loco hauled trains. The only loco hauled passenger trains are worked by a single 218 that covers a Leipzig - Hof - Leipzig - Hof - Reichenbach - Hof - Leipzig diagram with a push-pull set. Contrary to the diagram, the loco is at the Hof end of the set. Everything else is unit with DB Regio 612s on IRE and RE trains and Vogtlandbahn 642s on Cheb trains and 654s on everything else.
I had expected around six freights but only saw three and only one with a 232. The others were a pick-up goods with a 294 and a container train with a white 223 of unknown ownership (later confirmed as a Pressnitztalbahn loco).
The weather was generally overcast but there were plenty of sunny breaks in the Herlasgrün area and one of the 218 workings and the 223 were bagged in full sun.
I had expected around six freights but only saw three and only one with a 232. The others were a pick-up goods with a 294 and a container train with a white 223 of unknown ownership (later confirmed as a Pressnitztalbahn loco).

Another day on the photogenic Hof - Reichenbach line. Variety was the theme of the day with four freights hauled by a 232, a 241, a 233 and a 223, the last banked by a pair of 202s.
218.468 worked the Leipzig - Hof diagram again. The only other interest on the passenger front was a special worked by a pair of 798s belonging to Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde.
Once again the weather failed to live up to the forecast with thin cloud taking the edge off the light for most of the day.

A quiet day on the Hof - Reichenbach line with only two freights, both 232 hauled, and the 218 worked passengers, powered today by 218.390 for a change. The expected Plauen - Reichenbach pick-up goods didn’t run. For once the weather was actually as good as forecast.

There was no morning freight today so the time was spent enduring a trip from Reichenbach to Hof and back on 612s in order to look for new locations. The 218 workings and afternoon freight kept me busy for the rest of the day. 218.468 was back out today after a day’s break.

The morning mist took until 11:00 to clear, giving way to a gloriously sunny day. After an attempt to photograph the morning 218 from Leipzig, I tried something completely different, or a bit different at least.
The Wismut Werkbahn is an industrial operation based at Ronneburg, a few km east of Gera, and uses re-engined green Ludmillas to haul trains of sand. I was vaguely aware of its existence but had no idea where it was until Saturday when a local enthusiast mentioned it.
The line runs generally north - south through pleasant countryside and most of the locations looked best in the early morning or late afternoon. Although I was there in the middle of the day, I still managed to find a couple of reasonable spots. Trains appeared to run at approximately 2 hourly intervals from an undetermined unloading site somewhere south of Ronneburg to the loader at Kayna. Turnrounds at Kayna were quick and the loco would leave with a loaded train around 15 minutes after it arrived with the empties.
By mid afternoon it was time to leave for the long drive south to the Mühldorf area.

My first day at Mühldorf started very quietly with no freights on the Burghausen branch in the morning. Things picked up at lunchtime with five freights photographed in the afternoon including two triple headers (shades of Zhongwei in the early ’90s!).
Good to see the 217s still at work and so far no class 66s - long may it stay that way.
The morning mist stayed away until around 10:00 but then cleared again by 11:00 leaving a cloudless sky and bright sunshine for the rest of the day.

A busier start than yesterday but with no light it was all a bit academic. The fog lifted soon enough but only to form a layer of unbroken cloud that remained solid until early afternoon. After a couple of hours on the Burghausen branch I went exploring around Garching, finding some nice canalside locations just south of Schalchen and some more spots a couple of km north of Garching.
When the cloud finally started to break it was time to go back to the Burghausen line where a couple of well lit shots were bagged before the sun descended into the murk.
There were two pairs of 217s out today including red and beige 217.002.

Only one pair of 217s was seen but there were plenty of 225s around including a quadruple header on one train.
I was optimistic about the weather at first. The lights of the OMV refinery at Burghausen were visible at dawn from my hotel, 10km away, and that meant no fog. Unfortunately there was no fog because it was completely overcast and 10 degrees warmer than the previous two mornings. The cloud thinned a bit in the early afternoon but there was no sun at all and the cameras never felt the urge to leave their case.

Another grim day without any photos. Although it looked like it was trying to brighten up on a couple of occasions, the sun never really broke through and it felt more like December than October in the cold wind.
After a couple of trains on the Burghausen branch I headed west and spent a couple of hours at Schwabhausen, between München and Buchloe, before calling it a day. There were no real surprises with pairs of 218s on the ECs and single 218s with push-pull sets on the Memmingen, Füssen and Buchloe trains.

Another dull day but this time wet as well. At least the weather was bad enough to try some arty photos. I used most of the day for non-railway activities but spent a couple of hours in the middle of the day around Weinhausen, between Buchloe and Kaufbeuren before continuing to Immenstadt.

The forecast was for dull, wet weather all day, everywhere in southern Germany. With no realistic prospect of sunshine, I decided to give the car a rest and spend a day riding the trains as the easiest way to check out the photspots. My route took me from Immenstadt to Lindau, back to Kaufbeuren, down to Füssen, up to München, back down to Oberstdorf and finally back to Immmenstadt, loco hauled all the way apart from Füssen to München, which was propelled. Excellent value - 568km for €20 with a Bayern-Ticket Single.

More grotty weather. A half-hearted attempt was made to investigate some potential locations between Kempten and Günzach that I’d spotted from the train yesterday. When the rain got too heavy and the fog too thick, I headed west to Oberstaufen where it was merely dull. When it became clear that it wasn’t going to get any better I returned to Immenstadt.

It had been almost a week since I’d taken a photo in good light so I was sceptical of today’s forecast of sunny periods. It was certainly gloomy around Oberstaufen first thing but there were some breaks north of Kempten mid-morning, none of which coincided with the trains. Around lunchtime we struck lucky east of Günzach with several shots in brilliant sunshine before the cloud filled in again.
Everything ran pretty well as expected including the diverted ECs and the Kempten - Buchloe pick-up goods, albeit a bit earlier than expected. One unexplained sighting was 212.284 heading towards Kempten light engine.

Snow! It was snowing in Immenstadt at daybreak and continued on and off for a couple of hours. Trains from Oberstaufen were arriving at Immenstadt around 15 minutes late but those from München and Lindau were close to right time. North of Martinzell in the middle of the morning, the snow turned to rain and the lying snow quickly disappeared. At Günzach we found more snow but that also turned to rain before long. At 14:00 I left on the first leg of my long journey home. As if to wave two fingers at me the sun broke through almost immediately but the brightness didn’t last long.
Mittelweserbahn 275.102 propelled a long train of hoppers onto the section east of Günzach and did some ballasting in the gap between trains.

My original idea had been to spend most of the day on the Strasbourg - Nancy/Metz main line in eastern France before driving to Calais for the Eurotunnel shuttle back to the UK. With strikes in France apparently disrupting rail services there, I decided to rethink my plans and headed further north to have another go at the Moseltalbahn. For once the sun actually shone from start to finish.
Freight traffic levels didn’t seem to have been affected by events in France with 9 freights seen in around 5 hours. What was noticeable was the lack of SNCF BB37000s. The general freight services that they would have hauled still appeared to run but with DB class 185s on the front. The highlight was 140.801 heading south on coal hoppers at the end of the day.
Passenger services were much as expected with 143s on REs and 425s and 426s on RBs except for RE12024, which was worked by a unit, and RB12225, which was worked by a 143, as three weeks earlier. All the ICs produced 181s including orientrot 181.215 on IC336.
