The first day of my September 2010 Czech trip. After flying from Heathrow to Praha, I drove to the Sumperk - Jesenik line, arriving in the early afternoon. In common with many Czech diesel lines the Jesenik line has lost a significant number of loco hauled passenger services this year but the weekends are still fairly good. The other big change over the past year has been the arrival of class 754s at Olomouc, displacing many of the class 749s that previously dominated workings in the area. I was pleased to find two of the most photogenic 749s still at work but both the 754s in use were disappointingly carrying the drab grey/green livery. The old railcars of classes 831 and 851 are still around and it was a pleasant surprise to see an 851 and trailer covering one of the Jesenik - Zabreh semi-fast turns I’d assumed would have been an 843. The Saturday afternoon freights ran as expected with class 751s. If it hadn’t been dull and wet it would have been a good afternoon.

A second day on the Sumperk - Jesenik line. Despite a promising forecast it was mainly cloudy with occasional sunny breaks, a few of which actually coincided with passing trains. It was also a day of surprises with no less than three 749s out and only two 754s, both in nice liveries. R1403 from Brno was half an hour late and was the longest train I’ve ever seen on the line, consisting of a loco and eight coaches, although the rear two turned out to be an 843 and trailer. It’s more difficult to tell the difference between units and ordinary coaches with the new livery. The 843 dropped off at Lipova Lazne and ran round its trailer to form a truncated Sp1702 to Olomouc. Another loco plus railcar combo appeared during the afternoon when 749 246 piloted the 851 on Sp1703 to Jesenik. The 749 returned south almost immediately with R1400. The final surprise was 754 021 and 754 028 double heading R1402 from Jesenik. Both engines were definitely running but I couldn’t tell whether both were powering as I saw the train going downhill.

Another day that promised much but delivered very little. There was more sun than on Sunday but very little of it actually shone on trains. The day’s only quality photos were of an 851 at Branna in the early afternoon. Another 851 caused the day’s only excitement by failing at Jesenik, requiring Sp1708 to Zabreh na Morave to be formed of 751 141 hauling the dead railcar and trailer. 749 265 handled the regular passengers for the third day in a row. Despite the arrival of 754s at Olomouc, 749s are still very much in evidence on the Jesenik line.

Just when things appeared to be settling down to a steady pattern, the Jesenik line sprang another of its surprises. 749.265 went south with the morning train to Brno, as expected, and no surprise as it had worked every Brno train over the past three days. However, it was 749.259 that came back with R903 and, having got to Jesenik, it refused to come back, at least under its own power, and CD Cargo’s 749.247 eventually worked R902 south 105 minutes late and with a dead 749.259 in tow. Finally, 749.246 worked R901 north in the late afternoon, making four different 749s on the four Brno trains.

851.021 behaved impeccably on the Jesenik - Zabreh semi-fasts but Os3653 to Branna turned up with an 810 that continued ECS to Jesenik instead of turning and forming Os3658 back to Sumperk. An 843 eventually arrived, tacked on the back of northbound Sp1703, and then returned south as Os3658, almost half an hour late.

In contrast to the chaos on the passenger side, the freights worked very much as expected. 751.141 sounded superb storming up to Ostruzna on a long train of empties forming Mn83401 and 751.374 took advantage of the disruption in the wake of 749.259’s failure to run south very early on 45264, passing Ostruzna only ten minutes after it was booked to leave Lipova Lazne. 751.149 was in the loop at Ostruzna as I left, probably waiting for a path to return north after banking 45264 over the summit.

If I’d stuck to my original plan and gone to the Olomouc - Unicov line, I’d have missed all the fun. For the first time since I arrived, the weather was clear at dawn and it was early afternoon before any serious cloud arrived. The latter part of the afternoon was almost completely overcast but I had a few shots in the bag by then.

After four days on the Jesenik line, I'd driven south yesterday evening to Slavkov u Brna, on the Brno - Veseli nad Moravou line.

I set off this morning to find some spots on the Luhacovice branch but instead found a couple of large holes where the track should have been and buses providing the service between Ujezdec and Luhacovice. The sky was totally overcast with no sign of any breaks and the will to do anything constructive deserted me. The cold I'd been fighting off since the beginning of the trip took over and the rest of the morning was spent dozing and watching the comings and goings on the line west of Ujezdec. Very considerate of SZDC to provide bells at a nearby level crossing to wake me whenever there was a train around. The afternoon continued the morning’s lethargy, this time near Krizanovice, between Slavkov and Bucovice, trying to sleep through the afternoon rush from Brno.

Plenty of colourful 754s around and even some interesting railcars in the form of an 850 and both the prototype 842s but not the slightest hint of sunlight or blue sky all day. Tomorrow’s forecast is for more of the same but with rain.

Anticipating another dull day, I headed west to see what was happening on the Brno - Jihlava line and was taken aback when the sun came out. It took a while to find a photo location. The first candidate, at the west end of Kralice station, has become very overgrown since I was last there. Eventually a spot was found near Vysoke Popovice and a few trains were photographed in good light.

After a couple of hours, I returned to the Brno - Veseli line and checked out a few spots around Brankovice. Again, most have become overgrown since I was last there. The sky stayed resolutely overcast to the east of Brno until sunset.

It was a traumatic experience to see that 754.037 had been repainted in the new apology for a livery. What a sad fate for such a smart engine. On a happier note, it was good to see two 850s out today.

It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that the whole trip was planned around today. Early on a Friday afternoon there are three extra loco hauled workings east of Nesovice, ideally timed for the light on a line where almost every other train runs at the worst possible time. Everything else had to fit around spending Friday afternoon between Nesovice and Nemotice. Obviously the success of this plan relied on there being some light.

The day started well enough with fog lifting and a watery sun shining through. With no loco hauled trains on the Brno - Veseli line until after midday, I headed east to Hradkovice on the Stare Mesto / Veseli to Vlarsky prusmyk line and photographed 754.041 and 754.066 on the Luhacovice trains (still not going to Luhacovice - see 08 September’s entry). Prototype 842.002 was also seen.

Heading back towards Nemotice for the early afternoon, the light got progressively more watery until it dissolved completely into the clouds. Red and yellow 750.022 worked the first of the additionals, Sp1727 to Bylnice and another red and yellow beast, 754.062, was on the second and third, Os4143 to Nemotice and Os4148 back. A third red and yellow engine, 754.044, took me by surprise when it appeared on Os4113, which I was expecting to be a railcar but then Os4145, which I thought should have been loco hauled, turned up with an 854+054+954 set. Looking at the notes in the 13.6.2010 timetable update, I wonder whether this isn’t a diagram change as 4113 is marked as having first class accomodation (= 854+054+954) every day except Friday.

850.021 was out again, this time on Sp1730. On a related note, I realised that all the 020 trailers that used to be common on trains east of Brno seem to have disappeared and 050 trailers are now the norm. I can’t remember seeing any 020 trailers at all this trip. I’m sure they used to appear on the Jesenik line as well.

With no prospect of the light improving, I left for Ostruzna shortly after 16:00.

What a difference a week makes. In contrast to my earlier reports of 749s still working the vast majority of loco-hauled passengers on the Jesenik line, today everything was 754 worked. Four locos were out, 754.022, 028, 031 and 065, of which 028 was the only one not in the drab green/grey livery. The freights were more interesting with 751.141 and 749.149 breaking the Brejlovic monopoly (and the silence!).

R1403 was six coaches plus an 843 and trailer again, so may be regular. It was also late again but there was probably just enough time for the 843 to get to Jesenik, turn round and work Sp1702 back.

The weather forecast wasn’t particularly good but the sun broke through about 10:00 and it stayed largely sunny for the rest of the day. Overall, the best weather of the trip so far, it’s just a shame there weren’t more colourful engines about.

Sunday was basically a repeat of Saturday without the freights and with two “Plzen Blue” 754s instead of one. Something I hadn’t seen before was an 843 paired with a 954 driving trailer. They went north on Sp1701, with the 843 leading, and returned on Sp1704 with the driving trailer leading.

Although the day started totally clear, the clouds built up from mid-morning and it was totally overcast by mid-afternoon. I left for Nachod as soon as R901 had passed.

The day was spent on the Jaromer - Trutnov line where 754.030, 061 and 078 were active on the Praha - Trutnov fast trains. The local service seemed a lot more disjointed than a few years ago when the same pair of 854s shuttled backwards and forwards all day. This time every train seemed to be a different unit or a different formation, everything from an 810 to a 742 on a pair of bogie trailers, with several different 854s in between.

After a fairly cloudy start, I got some very hazy sunshine in the morning. Then the sky turned very black and the heavens opened for an hour long torrential deluge. I hoped for a sunny break afterwards but it didn’t happen and I called it a day around 16:20 when the next downpour was approaching.

The last day of the trip. It was misty first thing and I hoped it might clear to blue sky for a while before the next band of rain arrived during the afternoon. First stop was Cerveny Kostelec where it was quite atmospheric at first. R848 from Trutnov arrived 45 minutes late with a scruffy 750.162 on the front, so clearly there was a failure somewhere. By this time my atmospheric shot of a train looming out of the mist past a silhouetted tree had deteriorated into a dull shot of a dull train in a dull landscape. Meanwhile 742.184 had arrived from the north light engine and then returned with four empty wagons, taking advantage of the path left clear by R848.

Rather than waste the day just watching the comings and goings in the gloom on Table 032, I decided to have a look at Table 041, from Hradec Kralove to Turnov via Jicin. This line is a country backwater if ever there was one but it does have some semaphores, attractive stations and quaint halts. The Hradec Kralove end couldn’t ever be described as scenic but it’s not totally unattractive either. A few passengers on the line are booked to be loco hauled by class 714s and 714.217 and 714.219 duly appeared on their booked workings. The only other passenger train I saw was worked by an 814. Given the rural nature of the line it was a surprise to find a pair of 753.7 at Hnevceves. These belonged to AWT, formerly Viamont and were stabled in a fenced compound opposite the station. There was no sign of any traffic for them to work.

Then it was back to Praha Airport for the flight back to Blighty, catching a last glimpse of an 810 near Slany. As trips go it wasn’t the worst I’ve done but it was frustrating much of the time due mainly to the unsettled weather. The time spent on the Trutnov line and in the Brno area didn’t yield a lot although there were a couple of reasonable shots. Jesenik was the highlight by a long way. Even with the reduced volume of loco haulage this year, it’s still the top Czech line in my book, although you do have to wait longer between trains.
