Spain : Photo Galleries Updated
18/02/14 11:33
Better late than never! Pictures from Mallorca's two very different railways, taken in March 2013, have been added to the Spain Photo Galleries. The electric line to Sóller is a gem, still using 1920's built wooden bodied motor coaches, while the SFM is all modern with grubby plastic DMUs and EMUs.

Spain : Mallorca Trip Report
19/03/13 15:40
Mallorca might not sound like a promising destination for a railway enthusiast but it’s home to two very different narrow-gauge railways, one of which is a real delight and the other an efficient but soulless modern railway. This report details brief visits to both lines during a week’s visit to the island in March 2013.

Spain : FC de Soller in Snow
23/02/12 16:06
A handful of pictures and a brief report from the FC de Soller on the frozen Mediterranean island of Mallorca in February 2012. This remarkable line continues to operate its services using 1929 built, wooden bodied motor coaches and includes street running in downtown Palma.

Spain - Ponferrada Villablino Pictures
08/07/08 13:18
The Ponferrada - Villablino was one of those railways that stood out from the crowd. This 62km metre gauge coal carrier in north-west Spain remained 100% steam worked until 1980. It was blessed with superb scenery, plenty of impressive bridges and tunnels and a fleet of very distinctive locomotives. I made three visits between 1979 and 1981 and despite being a photographic novice who couldn't compose or expose a picture to save himself, came away with a few photos I'm happy to publish more than quarter of a century later.

Spanish Trip Report - Nov 2007
24/11/07 10:00
The Albacete - Murcia - Cartagena line in south-eastern Spain is still worked by diesel locos, including the last dedicated Talgo machines of class 354 and the new class 334s. There's some heavy freight to and from the industries of Escombreras as well. This wasn't the busiest line I've ever visited but the splendid scenery and good light contributed to a successful trip.

Mallorca Trip Report and Photos

How many railways in the world, let alone in Europe, still use traction built in the 1920's in everyday service? There can't be many but the Soller Railway on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca is certainly one. Trains continue to be operated by 1929 vintage, wooden bodied power cars hauling strings of even older trailers. The opportunity to photograph them arose during a short family visit to Mallorca in February 2007.
