F.C. de Soller in Snow

05 February 2012

Report by Duncan Cotterill

A short visit to the F.C. de Soller on the frozen island of Mallorca on Sunday 5 February found motor coach No.2 working all services. The current timetable has trains departing Palma at 08:00, 10:50, 13:05, 15:15 and 19:00 and departing Soller at 09:10, 11:55, 14:10 and 18:00. Trains take between 50 and 55 minutes to complete the journey and consist of a motor coach and up to half a dozen bogie trailers.

The area at Santa Maria where ex-EuskoTren electric loco 4.010 was stored is now a permanent way depot and there was no sign of the loco there. There was also no evidence of the planned undergrounding of the line that would have replaced street running in the Palma area. Hopefully that’s one project that has fallen by the wayside as a result of the current squeeze on finances. The sight of an octogenarian, wooden-bodied motor coach trundling through the city streets with a string of matching trailers in tow is one of the railway wonders of Europe in this era of increasingly bland plastic trains.
