BAD WEATHER IN BADEN WÜRTTEMBERG

dodging cloud and rain in the south-west

Germany - 27 April to 10 May 2017 - Report by Duncan Cotterill

INTRODUCTION

A two week trip to southern Germany in late April and early May 2017. There was a new class to photograph on a line I knew well, a busy scenic line that had been explored by train and on Google Earth but not yet photographed and a last chance to visit a busy diesel worked route before the classic locos are replaced by bland new traction. As the title suggests it wasn’t as easy a trip as it should have been.

This page contains details of the locos and trains observed based on my daily posts on European Rail Gen during the trip. Multiple units have been omitted. The main report, which is more descriptive and illustrated, can be accessed here.

Observation Report for Thursday 27/04/2017

All Stuttgart - Singen & v.v. REs were loco worked except 19032 (booked EMU). RE 19035 & 19038 were a 146 on the Stuttgart end of the set, the others 111s on the Singen end of push-pull dosto sets.

All Stuttgart - Rottweil & v.v. REs were 425 EMUs except RE 19380, which was a 111 on the Stuttgart end of a push-pull dosto set. Looks like this working finishes tomorrow.

Two 101s, a 115 and a 120 were seen on ICs

Three freights were seen, a 152 on a SB intermodal, the first time I’ve seen anything other than a 185 used on a DB freight here, and a 263 (Voith Maxima), which went south on a train of squat grey containers then returned a couple of hours later. No idea where it went but it couldn’t have got far beyond Rottweil in the time available. This was a spoil train from the Stuttgart 21 excavations to Dießlingen, worked as far as Rottweil by the Maxima. Also missed a yellow 203 heading north with a track machine while changing locations.

Observation Report for Friday 28/04/2017

A better day weather-wise but still fairly cloudy with just the odd shot in sun.

No change to which trains were loco worked and which were units but that was as far as it went. Most of the Singen REs were the opposite way round to yesterday, with the loco at the Stuttgart end, although all were 111 worked. The only 146 seen was on the dated Rottweil train, RB 19380, which was due to finish today according to my timetable. “pp” denotes propelling in the lists below.

There were two 115s out on the Zürich ICs, 115.350 in red and the hideous 115.509. Everything else was 101.

On the freight side, DB 185s worked a southbound mixed freight in the morning and a northbound train of vans in the evening. I was within sight of the line all day and the 152 hauled container train definitely didn’t run. There were two Mertz trains, hauled by two different flavours of Maxima but with identical looking loads of squat grey containers. The first went south around an hour later than yesterday and also returned north an hour later but there was also a second southbound later in the afternoon.

Observation Report for Saturday 29/04/2017

Another busy day for 115.509, working IC 181, 280 and 281. All the other ICs were 101s, in fact the same 101s as yesterday and two of the three were out the previous day as well.

All the Singen REs ran with the loco at the Stuttgart end and, apart from 146.214 on RE 19033/36/39, all were 111 worked.

No freights were seen but I’m reliably informed that the Maximas out on Thursday and Friday were working trains of spoil from the Stuttgart 21 moleworks to Rottweil, from where a smaller loco trips them to a disposal site at Dießlingen on the Villingen line.

Observation Report for Sunday 30/04/2017

Alles in Ordnung today, total uniformity across the board. Every IC was 101 hauled and all the Singen REs were 111 worked, all with the locos at the Stuttgart end of their uniform 4-coach dosto push-pull sets. No freights, 115s, 120s or 146s sullied the order of the day and the sun even shone out of a uniformly cloudless sky.

Absolute ordered perfection until a steam loco showed up to ruin the pattern. 50.2988 went north light engine in the early afternoon. Wonder where that’s off to? Possibly on its way to Heilbronn for an event at the museum there.

Observation Report for Monday 01/05/2017

May arrived with a great big yawn. Grey skies and rain sent me back to bed for another half hour. The weather didn’t improve all day so I sat and watched the action at Eutingen until early afternoon then moved south of Horb for a bit before giving up.

After its absence yesterday 115.509 was back, working IC 185 and 184. Looking at the 101 diagrams this is consistent with following day C9 on Saturday and day C11 today. Wonder if it followed Sunday’s C10 and went to Frankfurt for the day?

Everything else was tediously normal with the same 3 111s on the Singen REs, still at the Stuttgart end (looks like this might be permanent). The other 3 IC turns were the same 101s as yesterday and, not surprisingly as it’s a public holiday, there was no freight.

Mission largely accomplished here with a few good shots of 111s on the line. I’d have preferred them at the Singen end of the sets but at least the 146s were in the minority and the 147s stayed away for the duration. Moving on to Stuttgart - Ulm tomorrow in the hope of good photting weather and more action.

Observation Report for Tuesday 02/05/2017

One last attempt to get some shots of 111s in sun at Eutingen. Unfortunately the 08:18 ex Singen had reverted to a 425+426 combo as it was a proper weekday. The next Singen was a 146 so it was almost 14:00 before my wish was granted and I could leave for the Stuttgart - Ulm line.

115.509 stuck to the 101 diagrams, working IC 182 as day C12 requires. The other ICs were 101 as expected. No freights were seen.

Headed north to Uhingen, west of Göppingen on the Stuttgart - Ulm line, somewhere I’d spotted from the train a few years ago. The location, on a bridge west of town, was OK but all the loco hauled regional passengers were facing Ulm and impossible to get a good shot of. They were all 146s so I wasn’t too fussed about missing them.

There was some interesting stuff about including the RailAdventure 103, sadly light engine, and a yellow 218 on the wrong end of a test train but an almost complete absence of freight. The duck was only broken by a 294 on a pick-up, fortunately going the right way. I kept postponing my departure in the hope that something really photogenic would appear and, eventually, it did, a nice red 115 on a short empty stock working. The final train was a bit of a mystery, an empty dosto push-pull set propelled by a 111 with all the destination indicators showing Aalen. Maybe it had just got lost!

Continued south-east along the Filstalbahn to Kuchen, west of Geislingen, but the weather had deteriorated from around 50% to 99.997% cloud overhead. It was a lot brighter to the west so I waited in the hope that it would clear but eventually gave up when it started raining. Still no freight.

Dull and wet to start with so watched the action at Urspring for an hour before the rain went off. The unidentified WB IC at 10:11 appeared to be an ersatz for ICE 690, 08:28 München Hbf to Berlin Ostbf, which didn’t show.

When the rain stopped I went to Amstetten and then Geislingen for a look at positions on the Steige. There were a couple of possibilities but it’s very overgrown for most of the climb. It was a relief when the freights started to appear as I was getting fed up with 101s and 146s. The 111 worked empty stock trains were a mystery - it was almost as if they’re testing them to see if they can keep time. IRE 4216 was a pair of 611s - I’d hoped all of these had gone to meet the scrapper by now but it seems not.

The mystery 111 worked empty stock trains were out again, as well as a 111 on a real train. The pair of 185s at 13:30 were formerly Crossrail locos, if I remember correctly. 602 was in HSL multicolours but 594 looked like de-branded Crossrail silver with red trimmings. Both had D-BRLL (Beacon Rail) VKMs.

Something funny going on in the bunny world with the expected 487 and 494 going back to Ulm on IC 2013, followed a couple of minutes later by 434 and 476 light engine. Shame they couldn’t have put all four on the IC. I didn’t see what was on IC 118 or 119, which might have provided a clue to what was happening.

Also a bit surprised to see a Czech registered coathanger on a train of open boxes.

Observation Report for Friday 05/05/2017

Headed south a day earlier than intended on the strength of the weather forecast being much better around Aulendorf than Geislingen. It turned out to have been a good decision, although it was mid-afternoon before that became apparent.

Still all 218s on the Stuttgart - Lindau IREs and ICs. A Traxx diesel was seen but it was on the Roßberg - Friedrichshafen stone train that used to be a 232 turn not so long ago. More traffic that DB has lost to the privateers!

On the DMU front, for those who are interested, if anybody, all the Ulm - Basel IREs were pairs of 611s and the Aulendorf - Ravensburg locals (normally Aulendorf - Friedrichshafen but Max is digging south of Ravensburg) were the same pair of BOB 650s shuttling back and forth. On the Aulendorf - Sigmaringen line the locals were pairs of DB 650s but the only IRE seen was a pair of DB 612s in Baden-Württemberg white and yellow - they looked very different and it was a long time before I realised what they were.

Observation Report for Saturday 06/05/2017

Very similar to yesterday train wise, except the stone train wasn’t seen - it shouldn’t have run today and I wasn’t in the right place to see it anyway.

A couple of trains photographed in good light but that was all, a few more in what might charitably be called cloudy-bright and the rest passed in full gloom. By 16:00 the rain had arrived and I gave up for the day (and probably the next two judging by the forecast).

Observation Report for Sunday 07/05/2017

A miserable wet day was forecast so it was time to put the cameras away, get a Baden-Württemberg Ticket and go travelling.

Drove to Aulendorf where, within 5 minutes of arriving, a woman had demanded that I show her how to use the ticket machine, a man had asked me for directions to the nearest petrol station without speaking and I’d helped a budgie to cross the road. Almost went to find a nice quiet lineside location where I could escape the madness.

First leg of the trip was to Stuttgart with 218.496 shoving to Ulm where 146.222 took over.

Down to Ulm on another 628, lucky as every other train seen was a 644. As expected, a Lindau - Stuttgart train pulled into the next platform at Ulm as we arrived, only it was the wrong train, the one that should have gone an hour earlier. Got the impression that the delay was due to something that had happened around Ravensburg. It was, 218.406 had failed there. Back north to Plochingen with 146.210 pushing.

North to the Filstalbahn for another day of sitting, watching and waiting. Fortunately there were enough trains to stave off the boredom until late afternoon.

Of note were IC 118 and 119 both with single 218s. Only 3 freights in 5 hours, not good, even for a Monday. Spent a lot of time trying to figure out the mystery empty stock workings without much success.

Observation Report for Tuesday 09/05/2017

And then the flood gates opened, 20 freights recorded and at least 3 others missed while changing locations, more in one day than the rest of the trip combined. Despite all that, it was very late in the afternoon before, eventually, two of them passed in sun. It had only taken 13 days to get a shot of an electric on a freight in good light.

DB’s bunny troubles appear to be continuing. 218.326 went west light engine and then came back on its own with IC 119. Who knows what happened to 218.491 after it went to Stuttgart with IC 118 yesterday? 218.343 and 495 sounded in good form though, and could be heard for miles before they flew past me on IC 2013.

Other highlights included 115.293 on the stock transfer move from München to Frankfurt, 221.105 going east light engine and 120.146 substituting for a 101 on IC 2261 and IC 2264. On the negative side IRE 4211 (09:00 Stuttgart - Lindau) was a pair of 611s.

After getting used to the IC push-pull sets facing either way at random, every single one of them had the loco at the west end today.

Observation Report for Wednesday 10/05/2017

A perfect day to end the trip – or that was the idea. The weather forecast was for clear blue skies and that’s the way it was from start to finish. I’d been on the line for long enough to know where the photo spots were and what time of day to visit them, the timetable was familiar and, not least, I had a cunning plan. What could possibly go wrong?

It started well enough with a couple of hours north of Kuchen with all the anticipated passengers and 6 eastbound freights passing in excellent light.

On to the footbridge south of Geislingen. Again everything was normal with EC, IRE and RB climbing the hill, followed by a freight at 10:57. I was a little surprised when the freight came up as there was an ICE due but assumed it must be running a bit late.

The ICE never appeared and neither did the next IC or IRE. In the opposite direction the expected RB came down but the following ICE, IRE and IC didn’t. Absolutely nothing passed between the descending RB at 11:06 and the next uphill RB, on time at 11:51.

It was time to move anyway so I drove to Amstetten where the information displays in the station indicated nothing was amiss. The only clue was a 185 on a westbound freight sitting in the loop when there was clearly nothing on the main line to hold it up. On to my favourite clearing in the woods near Beimerstetten to wait and see what would happen.

The RBs continued to run, with some delays, but close enough to the timetable for the workings to be recognisable. They were obviously turning round well short of Stuttgart as locos were coming back an hour earlier than they would have done normally. A 425, probably pinched from the Plochingen – Süßen shuttles, appeared on some trains that were normally 146s.

Westbound long distance services started running just before 13:00 and almost all ICs and ICEs due after that were seen, the principal exception being EC 218, replaced by IC 2012 running an hour late. Eastbounds started with IC 2263 at 14:15, about 30 minutes down, followed by IC 119 running about an hour late. A bit of detective work was required to identify which trains ran, not so easy with the ICEs but IC 118, 119, 2012 and 2013 were instantly recognisable and sufficient of the ICs could be identified from what the loco previously worked via the diagrams (a big thank-you to the compilers).

North to a spot between Gingen and Süßen, a convenient last stop before going to the airport. Also turned out to be an excellent photspot.

The IREs didn’t restart until around 16:00 with 146.223 and 146.210, the last two to go east in the morning, coming back on the 15:54 and 16:54 departures from Ulm. Not sure when eastbounds got going as I was on the move from 15:30 to 16:30, but the 16:01 from Stuttgart certainly ran.

Surprisingly freights started moving much earlier than the IREs but only the hotshots at first. Two were seen between 15:00 and 16:00, near Beimerstetten and Urspring respectively, the latter from the car as I drove northwards. They only really got going after 16:00 with 8 freights and several light engines seen in less than 2 hours near Süßen, including the one that had been looped at Amstetten for hours.

So what caused all the chaos? Seems that the overhead came down on the roof of a westbound train just east of Göppingen around 10:40. Suspect this was RB 19228, due Göppingen 10:49, as the loco and stock never reappeared. The only other candidate would have been 101.007 on IC 1268, due Göppingen 10:36, but that came back at the expected time. It took until 15:00 for repairs to be completed but single line working must have been possible from around 13:30 based on what I saw. The Stuttgarter Zeitung had more on the incident but it seems that DB tried to keep quiet about it.

That was it for the trip, back to Stuttgart Flughafen for the evening easyJet to Gatwick and a frustrating drive home after a frustrating trip.
