I love early mornings. That’s what I kept telling myself on the long drive to Gatwick for the 07:10 easyJet to Köln/Bonn and, in fairness, it was a fairly pleasant and hassle free journey, not least because I paid a bit extra to travel business class. Köln/Bonn must be one of the worst signposted airports anywhere and finding the car hire desks was an adventure in itself, as was finding my way out of the car park a few minutes later. Otherwise all went well and I was at the lineside somewhere north of Boppard around 11:20.
It didn’t take long to work out that there were some strange goings on railway wise and a good proportion of the InterCity trains were running on the right bank. I haven’t done a thorough check but I suspect that everything that’s wasn’t booked to stop between Mainz and Koblenz was diverted. Trains that were booked to stop somewhere on the left bank took their normal route including a good number of ICs, some of which were positively identifiable (those formed of SBB or ÖBB stock), the REs and locals. The 103 wasn’t booked to work today and IC118 was a 120 as anticipated. No freight was seen on the left bank.
In addition to the diverted ICs and the usual locals, the right bank was busy with freight, the vast majority of trains being hauled by DB class 185s. There was some variety in the form of a 145, Dispolok and Crossrail 185s and Railpool 186s but not a lot.

With no 103 expected during the morning, the right bank seemed the obvious place to go. I started south of Lorch, trying to get a couple of shots that had eluded me when I visited the line last year. There were plenty of freights but they were all going north and I needed trains going south. Eight northbounds passed in less than two hours but only two southbounds. It was the same at the next location, the Loreley Tunnel, where eleven northbound freights but only three southbounds passed in an hour and a half. The next location, north of St. Goarshausen, favoured northbounds so I was expecting the flows to reverse but they didn’t. Eleven northbounds and eight southbounds passed in the next three hours.
There seemed to be a bit more variety in the motive power than yesterday although DB class 185s were still far more common than anything else. A single 139 and a single 155 were the only old DB locos seen. A pair of 151s and a pair of 140s did pass but they were RBH locos. Crossrail, Railpool, Captrain and the inevitable MRCE Dispolok were also in evidence. 218.391, the yellow liveried loco that had been working ALEX services on the Oberstdorf branch in June, worked a civil engineers train north then returned south later, light engine.
Passenger services were largely as described yesterday with a number of InterCity services running via the right bank. Timekeeping was fairly poor so it was often difficult to tell which trains ran on which side of the river. It appears that the diversions are due to a shortage of staff at Mainz signalbox (thanks to Keith for the info) so they may continue for some time. Ex ÖBB 1042.520 also appeared, as it does almost every time I visit Germany, on a southbound ECS working on the right bank.
For a period of around an hour in the late afternoon, the right bank experienced an ICE fest with four southbounds and two northbounds seen, all 403s or 411s (I haven’t yet worked out how to tell the difference if there isn’t a number visible). I suspect these were diversions from the NBS as they didn’t fit with what was supposed to run via the left bank and weren’t seen yesterday.
I crossed to Oberwesel on the left bank for the late afternoon trains. IC118, the Salzburg - Münster, was worked by 103.235 as expected and EC6 was a Dispolok 182. The other ICs seen were worked by 101s. Most of the Frankfurt - Koblenz REs were top’n’tailed 143s on Dostos but RE12190 and RE12192 were 111s at the north end of single deck push-pull sets. Again, all the REs ran via the left bank, as did the Mainz - Koblenz locals. Timekeeping for the locals and REs was fairly good so it appears that the late running of ICs may not all be due to the problems at Mainz.
The weather was generally good but it did cloud up for a period in the middle of the day and again in the late afternoon, just in time to take out the 103 and 182 at Oberwesel. Oh well, try again tomorrow.

Fri 16 Aug 2013
24/08/13 21:14 | Fri 16 Aug 2013
A fabulous day with wall to wall sunshine from dawn till dusk, almost. One small cloud took out a 101 but who cares.
The whole day was spent on the left bank photographing at Bacharach first, then Bingerbruck, or Bingen(Rhein) Hbf as it’s now known, and finally Oberwesel. There are a number of additional IC services on a Friday so, despite the diversion of some services via the right bank, there was plenty of activity. With no freight expected and yesterday’s notes to act as a guide, it was easy to decide when it was safe to move without the risk of missing something. The gaps in traffic were also useful for shooting across the river.
Traffic patterns were very similar to yesterday on the left bank with 103.235 showing up on IC119 and IC118 as expected and 182.573 working EC7. There must have been a swap over at Basel because 182.174 came back with EC6 in the evening. A couple of 120s were seen, 120.126 on IC2012 and another (unidentified) on IC2311. All the other ICs were worked by class 101s, remarkably only one of which had a silly livery. Timekeeping was much improved and most trains were within a few minutes of right time. REs were worked by the same pairs of 143s seen yeaterday apart from RE12190 and RE12192, which were 111.121 and 111.115 respectively. Locals were all class 460 EMUs. The ICE fest on the right bank wasn’t repeated.
The freight traffic seen across the river was as varied as yesterday. Apart from the usual DB class 185s, a pair of 151s and a single 155 were seen. Four 140s (or possibly 139s) were seen, the same pair of RBH locos as yesterday and two DB locos on two separate southbound freights. Curiosities included a class 223 hauling a pair of Belgian class 18s south and two class 181s running in opposite directions light engine.

The sky was overcast at first but was forecast to clear. I reckoned the best place to be was on the right bank where more traffic meant more chance of getting something if there was a break in the clouds. I went to Lorch but the right bank wasn’t busier. All the diverted ICs had gone back to the left bank and there was some freight on the left bank as well. The cloud broke around 10:15, just after 139.287 had passed, but it was almost 11:00 before I got a southbound freight in sun, followed almost immediately by another one. A quick dash down to Assmannshausen bagged another two southbound freights before the sun got too far round.
Then I struggled to find good locations, trying several spots that turned out to be overgrown before ending up back at Oberwesel for the afternoon. Inevitably the right bank freights began to run thick and fast once I’d moved to the left bank. Among the gems I missed were four departmental workings, two hauled by ex DB V100s, one by an ex DR V100 and one hauled by a pair of V200s in RTS livery. There were a handful of freights on the left bank as well, two of which passed at precisely the same moment after three hours with only a single freight.
On the plus side, 103.235 covered IC118 and IC119 and EC6 and EC7 were Dispolok 182s although IC118 was the only one photographed in sun. Only one of the many 101s was in a silly livery so that was a bonus as well and IC2013 unexpectedly turned up behind a 120.
Once the sun died on EC6 I thought that was it for the day but it came back for a couple of shots across the river at St. Goarshausen before finally disappearing for good.

24/08/13 21:13 | Sun 18 Aug 2013
The weather was forecast to be dull and wet with a possibility of some sun in the morning. In fact it was completely overcast at dawn and stayed that way until late afternoon. The frequent heavy showers put me off doing any serious exploring so I spent the day at Oberwesel just watching the trains and boats go by.
There wasn’t much freight on the right bank, maybe a train each way every couple of hours, but there was one working I’d have loved to get in the sun. The pair of V200s returned south with a number of track machines in tow mid morning and I got a closer look at them. Both were 221s, looking very smart in RTS orange and black colours.
There were a few freights on the left bank and all the InterCity trains ran that way as well. As well as the 101s there were a handful of 120s working and more trains than expected were hauled instead of propelled. One ICE was substituted by loco and coaches. The biggest surprise of the day was that 103.235 went to Stuttgart with IC119 but didn’t come back on IC118. Instead it was 103.113’s turn for glory. EC7 and EC6 were worked by the expected Dispolok 182s and 182.574 on EC6 produced the only sunny shot of the day.
Then it was back up the Autobahn to Köln/Bonn Flughafen for the late easyJet back to Gatwick. Another trip over and another few pics in the bag. Where to next?
