After flying into Zürich on the early Swiss flight from Heathrow and collecting my hire car, I headed for the RhB, arriving at my first location, overlooking the Disentis line in the Rhein Gorge west of Trin, shortly after 11:00. After a number of shots, including 607 on freight 5232, 703 on freight 5236 and 603 on freight 5237, I moved on to a location the other side of Trin for another Ge6/6ii on freight 5243 and 603 again on freight 5244. All the passenger trains seen were hauled by class Ge4/4ii locos except for Glacier Express 904 with 646.

In mid afternoon I moved on to Bonaduz on the Albula line for the remainder of the day. Most trains ran as expected but freight 5152 had me confused for a while after it turned up behind 702 with 604 coupled behind but not powering. Then I learned from a German photographer that the Landquart - Davos line was closed between Fideris and Küblis due to a derailed crane. The train was in fact 5152 combined with 5336 from Zernez to Landquart diverted to run via Samedan and the Albula due to its usual route being closed. Another surprise was 704 turning up on a late running Bernina Express 950.

The weather was sunny and gloriously clear until just after 950 should have passed but cloud drifted in from the west before it actually arrived. All in all, a very good day with two new locations covered and a third done in much better light than on my only previous visit.

Today’s main destination was the area around Davos and Klosters. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the line closed between Fideris and Küblis but found trains running fairly normally with delays of between 10 and 20 minutes on affected services. Four sets were in use on the Küblis - Davos - Filisur section with 624, 645 and 648 working three of them. The fourth was formed of a suburban set with motor-coach 516 providing the power.

After covering locations either side of Davos and at Cavadürli, I moved on to Landwasser Viaduct in the late afternoon. The highlight there was 604 on Bernina Express 950. Once again the cloud moved in around 18:00 after a day of almost unbroken sunshine.

After two good days, I was expecting Friday to be a total wipeout. That was certainly the forecast and the day started totally overcast. I headed over to the Engadin via the Julier Pass and spent a couple of hours at S-chanf to check what was working the Pontresina - Scuol-Tarasp services. A bonus was seeing 701 working freight 5929 to Samedan as its usual route via Küblis was still closed. It soon started to rain and after seeing the three trains working the passenger service, I crossed the mountains again, this time via the Albula Pass. It was still raining at Preda where I stopped to check if 701 would appear on 5152. It did, with 605 coupled inside.

Then it was down to Bergün to check the day’s diagrams, which are posted at the station. Bergün is a building site with the goods shed demolished and a new platform under construction. The main station building is still there but looks out of place amongst the new concrete. While I was at Bergün, the sky suddenly cleared, producing a surprise shot of 622 in the sun. I carried on down to Filisur and climbed up to Landwasser Viaduct for a few more sunny shots before the next batch of cloud and rain arrived. The day ended with a shot of 651 during another short sunny break at Bonaduz.

Another dull start with the weather forecast to stay that way over most of Graubünden. The only hope of any sun was in the Engadin, so that’s where I went. It was dull when I arrived and soon started raining heavily. By mid afternoon the sun started to break through and there were some good sunny breaks in the late afternoon.

608 and 610 were out on the Engadin push-pulls, swapping over around midday. 607 worked RE1325 and RE1360 as diagrammed. 651 turned up on RE1148, booked for a Ge6/6ii, but much worse was to come when 3505 appeared on RE1149, the 14:58 Chur - St. Moritz, which conveys a 6-coach Glacier Express portion in addition to the normal stock. A 3-car EMU hauling a 12 coach passenger was a very impressive sight but a worrying one for the future.

The last day of my trip wasn't forecast to be brilliant but the weather turned out much better than expected. I spent most of the day on the Davos - Filisur line at several locations near Davos-Frauenkirch and at Wiesen Viaduct. On the way there and back I took a handful of shots on the Chur - St. Moritz line at Solis and Bonaduz.

On the Davos - Filisur line, everything had returned to normal after the temporary closure of the Fideris - Küblis section a few days earlier. 617, 624, 641, 645 and 650 were working the service. Nothing exceptional was seen on the Albula line either, until I dropped in at Bonaduz to get a last shot of 652 on the 15:58 Chur - St. Moritz before leaving for the airport. Shortly after 652 had gone, a new EMU passed hauling a late running Glacier Express 908, all 12 coaches of it! Is there anything they won’t use the new units on?
