15 April 2010

Off to Europe again to photograph diesels and electrics, this time mainly in Germany, but my first stop was the Saverne Gap in eastern France. I left home very early to drive to Cheriton in time for the 05:48 Eurotunnel car shuttle. The journey through the tunnel and across northern France was uneventful and by lunchtime I was checking into the Hotel des Vosges in Lutzelbourg, in the heart of the Saverne Gap. The afternoon was spent checking out potential photo positions between Saverne and Sarrebourg on the main line from Strasbourg to Metz and Nancy. Photography was attempted whenever the sun was out but I didn’t have a great deal of success. I spent most of the time around Stambach and Arzviller.

The table below details the trains seen. TGVs have been omitted as they were all worked by TGVs, surprisingly enough. Units have been included to indicate which trains were not loco hauled/propelled. I haven’t included any numbers for the AGCs because they didn’t appear to have any numbers, except for one set that had different numbers at each end of an articulated unit - that’s France for you!

16 April 2010

A second day in the Saverne Gap, west of Strasbourg. There was supposed to be a strike on SNCF but everything appeared to be running normally. A few trains were late but every single passenger train that was expected turned up. Once more, the weather was mixed with long sunny spells and long cloudy periods. Photography was more successful today and I got all the shots I was after although usually only after a long wait and several attempts. The morning was spent at the viaduct west of Arzviller and the west end of the Arzviller Tunnel. The afternoon was spent around the former Arzviller station.

29 April 2010

From Leipheim, I drove west, crossing into France north of Strasbourg, and reaching Arzviller in the Saverne Gap around midday. Major snarl-ups on the motorway around Stuttgart delayed my arrival by about an hour. I spent the early afternoon around the closed Arzviller station before continuing westwards.

The light was getting difficult at Arzviller by 15:30 so I left for the long journey west to the Channel Tunnel, travelling via Saarbrücken, Luxembourg and southern Belgium. Final arrival home was at 01:00 the following morning.
