The "Night Aberdonian" wasn't scheduled to stop at York so it was a pleasant surprise when 55 008 drew to a halt in the centre road with 1S70, the 22:15 King's Cross to Aberdeen sleeper at 01:10 on 12 December 1981. The Deltic sat in the perfect position for several minutes while a shunter moved a few hopper wagons from one side of the station to the other. It wasn't clear why this move took priority over one of the ECML's most prestigeous trains but I didn't complain.
