The End, Or Was It?
55 015 again, keeping company with an unidentified class 25 at Haymarket depot after working the northbound leg of the final Deltic special on 2 January 1981. Shortly afterwards the loco left for York and immediate withdrawal from service."Tulyar" was one of six production Deltics to be preserved, along with 55 002, 55 009, 55 016, 55 019, and 55 022. The prototype also survives as part of the National Collection. Almost 30 years after their "final" withdrawal, the unmistakable sound of twin Napier Deltic engines can still be heard occasionally, working special trains on Britain's main lines.
