Greater Anglia operates most passenger services in East Anglia and on several outer-suburban routes from London Liverpool St. The vast majority of GA trains are EMUs but some services were hauled by Class 37 diesels or Class 90 electric locos until late 2019 and early 2020 respectively.
The Greater Anglia franchise spans a wide range of services, from InterCity expresses linking Norwich and London to 2-car DMUs on rural single-track branch lines in the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire countryside. It also includes intensive outer-suburban operations from Liverpool Street. Inner suburban services in the London area were taken over by Transport for London a few years ago.
South of Ipswich and Cambridge almost all the lines used are electrified, as are the main-lines north to Kings Lynn and Norwich. Today all services on these routes are worked by EMUs and Greater Anglia is in the process of modernising its fleet, even replacing relatively modern units with brand new ones. The prestige Norwich - London expresses were worked by Class 90 electrics on push-pull rakes of MkIII stock until they were replaced by new Stadler class 745 EMUs in early 2020.
The Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire branches have generally been DMU worked for decades but a shortage of units led to the use of Class 37s on a few workings between Norwich and Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft from 2015 to 2019. New class 755 bi-mode units replaced the Class 37s and all GA's existing DMUs from 2019.
