Matanzas Province is in western Cuba, occupying an area to the east of the capital, La Habana (Havana). Sugar growing was concentrated in the central and northern parts of the province. The mills here tended to be smaller than many of those further east but were certainly no less interesting.
Matanzas province survived the re-organisation of 1976 largely unchanged. The old provincial structure was the basis of the mill numbering system and was widely understood in the industry and in railway enthusiast circles. It is used here for convenience. Matanzas mills were numbered in the 3xx series.
