New Order
During the 1980s and 1990s Austria had one of the most interesting railways in Europe. While relatively modern class 1042 and 1044 electrics handled most traffic, less demanding work was still entrusted to a variety of wonderful older classes. The arrival of hundreds of new class 1016 and 1116 locos quickly consigned all the older engines and many of the newer ones to the scrapyard. Today, Austria has one of the least varied fleets on the continent.1016 017 hauled a southbound Ro-La piggyback service up the north ramp between Matrei and Steinach on 18 June 2003.
