Austrian railways have long carried a healthy volume of freight, much of it international traffic between Germany, or elsewhere in northern Europe, and Italy, eastern Europe or the Balkans. All types of traffic can be seen, including wagonload freight, with most trains concentrated on electrified main lines.
Although most freight is carried in block trains on the main international corridors, there are still wagonload services delivering small numbers of vehicles to individual sidings all over the country.

In recent years the liberalisation of the European freight market has resulted in a greater variety of locomotive classes and liveries being seen on freights on the international routes through Austria with state railways and independent operators both very active.
