Another trip to Germany to try some of the lines that got away the last time. I took the 06:20 easyJet from Gatwick to München arriving around 30 minutes early due to a prompt departure and a strong tailwind. The take off was very impressive - we must have used around ten yards of the runway at Gatwick before we were airborne. There was a lot of cloud over München but it looked much clearer to the south when we landed. By the time I’d collected the hire car, the blue sky had moved a lot further south and by the time I reached Klais, between Garmisch and Mittenwald, it was well over the Austrian border and probably the Italian border as well. The forecast was for cloud and rain after a sunny start so there was little chance of getting any worthwhile shots once the light had gone.
The opportunity was taken to ride the line in order to look for photspots. I travelled from Klais to München, then back all the way to Mittenwald before returning to Klais. I did wonder whether a normal return ticket from Klais to München would have been the most economic option but it worked out at twice the price of a Bayern Ticket, so that was what I used.
It was noticeable that there weren’t a lot of pictures of the Mittenwaldbahn on the web and I soon found why. The trackside is horrendously overgrown almost all the way, quite a change from most of the lines I’m familiar with in southern Germany. It’s a shame that photography looks so difficult because the autumn colours are fabulous and probably the best I’ve seen this side of the Pennsylvania state line.
All the München - Mittenwald trains were worked by class 111 electrics, as expected. Some trains were formed entirely of single deck stock, while others were a mixture of single and double deckers. All trains were push-pull with the loco at the Mittenwald end. Timekeeping wasn’t good with ten minute delays common.
Class 426 EMUs were seen at Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Reutte services but there was a class 442 stabled there as well. Class 442s, or maybe the same one twice, were seen on Oberammergau services at Murnau both times I passed through. Locals from Weilheim to Augsburg were class 648 DMUs operated by the BRB (but probably no relation to the BRB that used to live at 222 Marylebone Road). Class 423 EMUs worked S-Bahn services north of Tutzing.
Two freights were seen between Tutzing and München, much to my surprise, both worked by unidentified Augsburger Localbahn V100s.
At München itself, a good selection of trains was seen. One Passau service was a 440 EMU but two others were 111s. Most trains turned up with the expected traction though. One IC working wasn’t identified. I thought it was EC115 at first but that turned up later. It could well have been substituting for an ICE as the departure indicator showed an ICE as the next departure from that platform. Unfortunately I didn’t note which ICE. 103.245 was stabled outside the depot, looking magnificent amongst the 111s, and probably waiting for its afternoon trip to Nürnberg.

My second day on the Mittenwaldbahn got off to a very slow start. Every potential spot I visited had something seriously wrong with it, often just that the sun wasn’t high enough to get over the mountains at this time of year, not that there was a lot of sun to start with. I also got out of sync with the trains, hence the lack of sightings before midday. By late morning the sky was clearing nicely and the afternoon was practically cloud free.
I spent the middle part of the day around Klais before heading north to a spot between Eschenlohe and Ohlstadt when the sun dropped behind the mountains at Klais. Despite taking a number of shots with roads in the foreground or background, none of the pictures were ruined by vehicles getting in the way, a very rare occurance indeed. Not a bad day overall.
All the passenger trains seen were worked by 111s at the south end of push-pull sets, including the additional München to Garmisch working seen late on. The Bahnland Bayern blue liveried loco, 111.017, made two trips over the line but I managed to miss it both times. all the other 111s were in the standard red and mostly very smart.
A southbound freight hauled by an ÖBB 1016 and a 2016 took me by surprise as I left the spot north of Klais. It stopped just beyond the station for some reason, allowing me to get ahead of it but coming before I could climb up to a good position.

I left Garmisch-Partenkirchen first thing and drove east to the München - Salzburg line, spending most of the day at spots east and west of Traunstein but finishing off south of Prien am Chiemsee. The aim of the day’s photography was to get shots of 111s on München - Salzburg REs, which are due to go plastic in December. In that respect, the day was a failure with only one shot of a 111 hauled train in good light. I got quite a few shots in good light but they weren’t of 111s, which the clouds took out almost every time. One train took itself out. RE79017, the 11:42 from München, failed to appear at all.
There were plenty of long distance trains around, most of which were worked by ÖBB class 1116 electrics on RailJet or conventional stock. 1116.042, in the standard ÖBB red livery worked a railject to München and back.
DB class 101s were also fairly common on EC trains to Graz and Klagenfurt. IC2083 to Berschtesgaden was a Dispolok 182.5 as expected. Only one unit was seen, a class 628 working to Traunstein empty stock in the late morning.
Most freight was also worked by ÖBB 1116s or 1016s. There were some DB locos around including a 151 and a 139 as well as the inevitable 185s. The private sector was represented by a pair of 189s and a 139.

A perfect clear day from sunrise until an hour before sunset, when some hazy cloud appeared. I started on the München - Salzburg line with a couple of 111 hauled trains near Prien am Chiemsee. The line was closed for engineering work between Traunstein and Freilassing, so there was nothing else on this section, just the 111 hauled REs, terminating at Traunstein for a bus forward.
The rest of the day was spent on the Mühldorf - Freilassing line where EuroCity trains and a few freights, diverted from the main line, were being diesel hauled. Two 232s and two pairs of 218s were doing the dragging with the electric, a 101, 1016 or 1116, still attached. The Ludmillas, 232.209 and 232.240, were the same locos that were out on the previous Saturday. The Rabbits were 218.402+218.426 and 218.404+218.418.
Despite the attractions of long diesel hauled passengers, the star turn was a freight, the EKOL, a northbound intermodal train double headed by Lokomotion’s 212.249 and Bahn Touristik Express’s 217.002. Two other freights were seen, a southbound intermodal with unidentified power and a southbound mixed freight hauled by an ECR 266 with an ÖBB 1016 coupled inside.

The final day of the trip dawned clear, much to my surprise as it wasn’t forecast. It wasn’t long before the cloud rolled in and by the time I reached Tüßling for my first shot, it was completely overcast. The sun did break through on occasions, particularly in the early afternoon, but it was cloudy most of the day and only a couple of shots were taken in good light.
It wasn’t such a good day for the trains either. Timekeeping was very poor, not only for the ECs but also for the local services they delayed. After seeing north and southbound ECs near Tüßling, I went on to Garching, arriving just after 10:00, at the same time as a southbound local. It should have crossed the northbound local and left after a couple of minutes but was held for the late running northbound and the following northbound EC, finally departing almost 50 minutes late.
There wasn’t as much 232 activity today. 232.209 made a round trip from München to Freilassing and back on EC111 and EC114. Northbound EC390 was also 232 hauled. I didn’t see the number but it was reported on the KBS960 forum as 232.240. Unfortunately it didn’t come back from München, being replaced by 218.403+218.440 on EC113 and EC216. The other two pairs of 218s on the diversions were 218.402+218.426 and 218.404+218.418.
When I arrived at Garching in the morning I was pleasantly surprised to see a southbound EKOL intermodal in the loop. It must have been there for some time as it hadn’t passed me at Tüßling and the line had been occupied by the DMU for most of the time I was travelling between locations. The surprise grew even more pleasant as the 212 and then the 217 came into view but then the cruelest disappointment, there was a 266 ahead of them. If ever there was a case of a monstrous carbuncle on the face of an old friend, this was it. It appears that the 217 and 212 had worked as far as Garching on their own but due to some unspecified defect the 266 had been summoned from Mühldorf to take over. The train finally left just after 11:00, after waiting for northbound and southbound locals and a northbound EC. The 266 was doing all the work with the other two locos shut down and unmanned. The 266 returned on its own in the afternoon with the northbound EKOL. No other freights were seen.
After seeing EC216 pass in rapidly failing light, it was time to drive back to München Flughafen for the flight back to Gatwick.
