4-CIG 1224 (421.224) approached Pirbright Junction with the 10:49 from Southampton Central to Waterloo on 20 July 1989. The 4-CIGs were used on many of the Southern Region's long distance services and offered a higher standard of comfort than the 4-VEPs. The CIG code was a combination of 'C' from corridor and IG from Brighton and nothing to do with smoking, which was still permitted on trains in 1989.
