137 Class 455 4-car 750V DC EMUs were built in the mid-1980s to replace older slam-door stock on inner suburban services. The 24 Class 456 2-car units followed in 1991. SWR withdrew the 456s in 2022. Southern's Class 455s went the same year but SWR's lasted until replaced by 701s in early 2026.
