Austria's Alpine scenery and eclectic variety of traction first attracted me to the country in the 1970s. There's less variety now but it's still an attractive country with a reasonable number of loco hauled passenger trains and heavy freight traffic on the major routes.

Denmark isn't an obvious destination for railway photography with little dramatic scenery and few loco hauled trains. However, it was worth visiting Jutland in July 2014 and July 2015, when freight traffic to Germany was diverted via Esbjerg and Tønder with diesel haulage.

The big attraction in Cuba was the sugar cane harvest that took place in spring every year. Most mills had their own rail system to bring cane from outlying loading points to the mill and many of them still used steam locomotives right up to the end of the 20th century.

Turkey is a fascinating country with both European and Asian influences creating a unique culture. In steam days the varied locomotive roster was the result of numerous foreign influences but the current scene is dominated by a few classes of diesels and electrics as well as the inevitable multiple units.

The Czech Republic, a.k.a. Czechia, is a small country full of railway interest, with an attractive landscape, a variety of traction and, at one time, an almost infinite multiplicity of liveries. Sadly, modernisation is now taking its toll, making the railway more efficient and less interesting every year.

Slovakia is a small central European country with an interesting rail system. There are significant differences to Czechia in some areas such as liveries and the rates at which some of the older classes have been withdrawn. One thing that the two countries do share is a very attractive landscape.

Spain's railways certainly haven't lacked variety over the last 50 years, most of which is now history. Galleries here include the last steam worked narrow gauge line, an electric railway that still uses 90 year old motor coaches today and a diesel worked main line running through the arid hills of the south.

Almost twenty years of UN sanctions kept steam alive in Rhodesia through the 1960s and 1970s and, by the time the country entered the 1980s as the newly independent Zimbabwe, it still had a fleet of Garratts, over 80 of which were in the process of being refurbished at the ZECO works in Bulawayo.

Switzerland is famed the world over for its beautiful alpine scenery and its excellent, punctual and well connected transport system. The railways are a real delight with a huge variety of gauges, railway companies, locomotives and liveries all running through the picturesque Swiss landscape.

France

Although France is Britain's nearest neighbour, French railways haven't featured on many of my trips. Infrequent trains, erratic timetables and the total foreignness of the place made visits hard work in a way that other European countries weren't. A great shame as many of the locos were superb.

Germany

Germany has one of the largest and busiest railway systems in Europe with most important routes electrified. There's plenty of freight traffic on the main routes and frequent passenger trains on most lines. Add some attractive scenery and a wide variety of liveries and you have an excellent place to photograph trains

My home country where I've been photographing trains since the late 1970s. Only a small fraction of my British material is online at present but it covers a wide range of loco classes, train types and photo locations, from northern Scotland to the south coast of England and from Deltics to DMUs.

It's difficult to comprehend the scale of China's railway system or the speed with which it's changed over the last few decades. The photos here are the result of dozens of visits to main line and industrial locations across the country since 1984 and depict many classes of steam, diesel and electric loco at work.

Collections are groups of images with a common theme that don't fit neatly into the country based structure of the web galleries. This is where you'll find the New Photos collection, showing the latest additions to the site. Other collections will follow in the future as time allows.
