A Great Leap Forward?
The big breakthrough on our 1989 trip was knowing the times of the Pacific hauled trains. That meant we could be in the right place at the right time on a regular basis. It may not sound like rocket science but railway photography in China in the 1980s generally involved going somewhere for a whole morning or a whole afternoon with an obligatory two hour lunch break in between. To visit several locations on the same day, targetting individual trains, was fairly revolutionary. After photographing the 15:20 departure to Changchun at Jiuzhan, we travelled across the city to Longtanshan to photograph SL 623 pulling away with train 425, the 16:08 Jilin to Wuchang slow passenger. A short bus ride for us but a great leap for gricerkind?
