A Giesl By Any Other Name
One of the most significant modifications made to QJs was the fitting of "oblong chimneys", uncannily similar to Giesl Ejectors but without the licensing fee. Many of the early QJs around Changchun were so fitted and also lost their cowlings, making the replacement chimney very apparent.QJ.119 was one of those modified and was photographed accelerating a long northbound freight away from Changchun on 3 April 1988.
