Class 1822 was supposed to be the future power for trains between Austria and Italy but the five prototypes were dogged with problems and the project was eventually abandoned without any more locos being built. Class leader 1822.001 climbed the Brenner south of Matrei with E1873, the 18:01 from Innsbruck to Lienz, on 19 June 2003. A dual voltage loco was required as the route crossed Italian territory, electrified at 3000V DC, between Brennero and San Candido.
