In the late 1950s China imported over 1000 FD Class 2-10-2s from the USSR to operate it's rapidly expanding system until a domestic heavy freight design, the QJ, went into production. The FDs were re-gauged and saw service in most parts of China over the next two decades. the last members of the class were withdrawn in the mid-1980s.
FD 1979 was on display at the Beijing Railway Museum on 26 September 2004 in a non-authentic brown livery. In service the FDs carried the usual black with red wheels and white tyres.
