Stripped Down
Lanzhou Works was one of a number of workshops that overhauled steam locomotives for CNR and often for industrial users as well. On 17 January 1992 this unidentified QJ was stripped down to reveal details of the boiler and frames, including the external steam pipe. This ran along the top of the boiler from the dome to the regulator and was usually hidden under the skyline casing. The frames of another QJ can also be seen in the background. Steam overhauls ceased at Lanzhou a few months later, as dieselisation and electrification took their toll on the local steam fleet.
