Flying Start
QJ 2144 made a flying start from Nancha with a long train of flats bound for the timber yards along the Wuyiling line on 30 January 1996. Out of sight at the back, DF4 7133 prepared to give the train a push up the short, steep bank to the summit south of Liushu. The QJ could have managed on its own but the diesel needed to get to Liushu to assist the next loaded southbound up the other side of the hill, piloting the steam loco. The diesels had only recently taken over banking and piloting duties at Nancha, which were previously handled by QJs.
