The sign was erected 100 years earlier to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, formally bringing the First World War to an end. The sign has lasted considerably longer than the treaty, which was being seriously violated within a couple of years and failed to prevent the re-militarisation of Germany and the Second World War, only 20 years later.camera : Nikon D600
