026 East Coast Main Line
81-UK-0320
Racing Ground
The wide open spaces of eastern England provided few obstacles to the Great Northern Railway when it built the southern section of what became the East Coast Main Line in the mid 19th Century. The line soon became known for fast running with some of Britain's most celebrated locomotives including Stirling singles, Ivatt Atlantics, Gresley Pacifics and Deltics calling it home. HSTs took over the principal services from the Deltics in 1978 and still operate a few services in 2015.Power cars 43.098 and 43.061 raced south near Claypole with the 09:10 Harrogate - Kings Cross express on 21 October 1981.
